Hope someone can help!!
I'm new to linux and i've not long installed Suse 9.3 Pro on my 64bit machine. Everything works fine for a few days, but then after installing software like games and restarting my PC i cant login as user only as root. this has happened about 3 times now and i have to make a whole new directory and user. also on the login screen if i click on console login it just takes me to a weird coloured screen and then freezes for a few seconds then takes me back to the login where again i can only login as root. A friend of mine has told me he thinks it's somethin to do with X Window but has never come across this problem before. His friend is running 9.3 but on a 32bit machine and not had any problems. So i'm thinking its somethin to do with the 64bit installation.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Do you get any sort of error messages? Have the permissions for your /home been changed?
This might help: http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?t=138766&highlight=suse+login+problem

I don't get any error messages, just returns me to the login screen like nothin has happened. and the console login just shows a multi-coloured screen and then takes me back to login screen no sound, messages, nothin.

Did you install Yahoo Messenger by any chance? I had that problem in the past, with a friend's machine, every timehe installed Yahoo Mesenger, it would break his user installation!
Try and recall what apps you installed before it broke...

I have installed Yahoo messenger on my system.
here's everythin i've installed:
UT2004
Doom 3
Yahoo Messenger
and thats it really
a part from the odd update for Nvidia and a kernel update
Do you think if i uninstalled messenger the problem would fix itself???
Cheers for your reply.
Rick ;)

You might aswell try uninstalling Yahoo messanger, it won't hurt at all and it's caused problems for others. Just to let you know, Gaim has Yahoo support if Yahoo messanger is the problem.
leonpmu, do you have any idea why Yahoo messanger caused the problem for your friend? Or for that does anyone? Is it possible that a patch has fixed this? Or don't Yahoo care enough

Is the password field greyed out? Or when you type in it nothing is shown, *'s for instance, if nothing's shown type your password in anyway. It just means that the character's aren't being echoed.

Hi there! I`m quite a new guy in Linux, so... here is what I did:
I had the same problem as being able to login, being returned in the same login window.
What I did? I went on windows, more on Google, searched a litlle on forums, asked friends, and came back, re-installed Suse 9.3, but without a level 5 for runtime in autentification, but at 2. Also, I didn`t installed Yahoo!Messenger... yet. That thing that in a default instalation is set to 5, could be a tricky thing, as one of my friends said, so I went for a level 2 autenthification level and everything`s fine. I`m not 100% that is a sure thing to escape from that never login session, but until now is OK.
When I`ll know more, I`ll return...
