Hey guys,
I am new to this forum i usually post on a different forum. I have a question for you guys. I know it's probably a newbie Q but oh well lol :P. I'm attending ITT Tech in a week and i'm recieving an external hdd for all my school work. I need to install windows on it so i can use all my school programs freely. I'm also recieving a dell laptop through the school loan. I"m only putting suse 9.3 on it. So the question is how do i boot from my external. I think i have to set my cpu to boot from cdrom first then usb then hard drive. and the usb should be picked up before the hard drive am i right? any help would be greatly appreciated guys :P thanks

1. i didnt know you could install windows on a external hd.

2. most new dell laptops you just press f12 at boot, and you will have an option to boot from usb.

i'm not 100% possitive that you can but ITT gives me one and i'm pretty sure they want me to install windows on it because i need to use it for work i can't just store files. but if i can do i all i have to do is unplug it when i want to boot from my hard drive right. thanks very much for your time and feedback :P

make sure its a usb drive. most of my classes that required us to install an os were on a removable ID drive.

Sounds like you want something like this (http://www.research.ibm.com/WearableComputing/SoulPad/soulpad.html).

These people put Knoppix on an iPod. After booting Knoppix, they run VMware which then runs Windows. If you can't afford VMware, you could probably do the same thing with qemu or Bochs. This would allow you to get around Windows' limitation of not being able to boot from an external USB hard drive.

all external drives should work.

The only modification you would have to make is if the drive is formatted ntfs, you would need to format it.
