Hi!

I am a noob on Linux but I have worked with computers since the Sinclair and Commodore were novelties (i.e. I'm an old geezer, retired)

I have problem to start installation of SuSe 9.3, 10.0 beta1 and beta 2.
Every time I boot from Cd 1, the Welcome Screen turns on all right and then when I choose the inst. type (even safe mode) I get the same result:[Out of Range!].
I have a 20" BenQ T903 LCD screen and Asus P4B533 motherboard 512 MB RAM, ATI Rage 128, 380 GB free space, WinXP on hda1.
Xandros, Mandriva and Fedora C4 have no problems but SuSe refuses to install.
It looks like it is a problem with the LCD screen at boot up.
Anyone who happens to know how to get the screen to behave right on SuSe?
I can of course try to find an old CRT screen fot inst. but it does not seem to me as the right way to do it. I want to know how to use the right driver to start with and then send this info to SuSe since they do not seem to have it in their boot script. Anyone who knows if I made a boot img. for Fedora etc, and used that to start install (maybe Knoppix boot floppy?)?
What command sequence should i use with Knoppix CD to start SuSe inst?

SuSe sometimes does not recognise an LCD screen on higher resolution than 1024x768
after first installation screen. One has to press F3 and choose either text mode or max 1024x768 resolution. Everything is kosher after that :-)
Mine has 1284x1024 as default an was therefore out of range. hrm...

I have two PCs with 17" LCD with maximum resolution 1280x1024. Both my Suse 9.3 and Suse 10 have no problem with it.

The 1280x1240 resolution in mine has to be scanned at 60 Hz. I did notice a few distros tried a higher frequency and failed and used a lower resolution of 1024x768 instead. I seldom intervene the display nowaday as long as I it is 1024x768 or better.

One can specify in the system configuration to use the 1280x1024@60Hz mode but I think in your case Suse may have chosen the wrong display driver for you. I also have a Radeon 256Mb video card which is accepted by all the distros so far.

My experience is that you can alter the driver if Suse has installed itself as the file can be edited in the terminal mode. Next time when you are in Suse's hardware configurator Yast try a different setting to see if you can complete the installation and to do the amendment later.

I had the same problem with a SuSE 9.3 installation. Personally I think safe mode installation should use text mode by default since none of the graphical resolutions worked in my case (crappy integrated Intel graphics). Oh well. Glad to hear you got it working.
