Okay, if you read my username that explains it all. :p
I am at a loss, the machine boots but teh mouse is screwed up I think. And windows keep popping up-I think from the action of the mouse.
Is the problem the mouse driver?
I can maanage booting a Windows machine from a disk on a good day, should I EVEN try to learn Redhat? Is the curve to high? Is it worth it?
Do I need the book?
I hope I am not too dumb for these forums, be kind those far geekier than I.

hit ctl-alt-f2 which will bring you to a command line log in...log in, then "fix" the mouse.
Are you using the same mouse as the person who set it up? usb? ps2? etc...
Is it worth it? Thats up to you.

I would say, do some research and try another distribution of Linux that you choose. Do a fresh install with most of the hardware you will be using (ethernet, mouse, keyboard, etc.) and you should be fine with a brand new install of the distro of your choice. That way you learn from the beginning. :)

What is it you hope to do with the machine? Is it your intent to learn Linux? I read what you wrote but do you want to learn, are you trying to expand your horizons?

if it has RH9 pre-installed, then you can be fine with directly using it. there is no need to change or reinstall at the moment, and you can qiuckly get a feel of what linux is like.

the X environmen is incorrectly configured. When I used to run redhat 9 I had the same problem. It a bug in redhat 9. It something to do with the display being incorrectly setup.
you have to reconfigure X with kudzu. not sure how to do it anymore.
edit: Needed to do it myself today. lol.

it is nothing to do with the mouse. I know I had the same problem with redhat, I tried setting my screen at 1152x800 and when i restarted X I had exactly the same problem.
