Greetings all! My question today is: what's up with Vidalinux? I mean, I've tried to install VLOS 1.1. and now the new VLOS 1.2, and can get neither to install.
Now don't get me wrong, I frequently install various linux distros, and am no stranger to stuff like Debian, Ubuntu, Slackware etc. etc....
....so, I've tried VLOS a few times and get the same strange results every time. And no, its not a bad burnt .iso. And yes I've checked md5sum before burning.
VLOS uses some kind of installer called Ananconda, which I'm not very familiar with, but which seems to work nicely. I did once get Vidalinux installed, but that was a previous version. Hmmm.
It just seems to get to the point where its installing everything, and that's when my case starts to beep (no other distro does that during install for me). What boggles my mind too is how dreadfully slow it is. I timed it and it took like 5 minutes just to install one small program. Anyway...
Just curious if anyone here is familiar with this distrobution and has some tips; I would like to try it out.

Thanks d00dz

erm...

from what i know, vidalinux is a derivative of gentoo, thus its source based too..

it uses the Anaconda installer from red hat.. Perhaps its slow to install cos its compiling the files from source?

I agree that it could be compiling or one thing I have noticed with some distros is if you have SATA drives and it detects them wrong, they are dreadfully slow.

Maybe your cpu is not supported. I believe VLOS only supports new kind of cpu's. If your download does't match your cpu there's a change that could be the problem. I have experienced this problem with VLOS.

Nope, just straight IDE here. And my CPU is just regular P4 2.00 GHz (Wilamette) strange that they would make their distro not support such a common CPU.
I read the FAQ and it says that VLOS does a stage 3 Gentoo install. I guess this means it uses a preconfigured binary for the installation, I assume this would be for the apps as well, not just the kernel and base system.
I guess I'm just curious to know what kind of success others have had with this distro, or if anyone else had a similar experience.

I've tryed it once or twice and had very similar experiences. I'll stick with plain gentoo, though I would like to try it if I could get it installed properly.

Stage 3 for gentoo is using prebuilt binaries for boot strapping and preconfigurd base layout..
Kernels and apps are still source.
Prebuilt binaries are avaliable in GRP.
So unless its VLOS says that its using GRP, i don't think that there are any prebuilt package binaries
