I am using MDK 10.2 have for a while.. I have several X managers on the system.
I would like to use these more since they are lighter in memory. Problem is.. I haven't figured out how to make desktop icons on those managers. I don't use many icons just 4 or 5 of my most used programs.
The following desktop managers I need help with are..
1) Fluxbox
2) IceWM
3) XFCE 4

---Any help would be appreciated. :))

Those window managers do not support desktop icons on their own. In the future, XFCE may do so, although IceWM and Fluxbox certainly won't.

What you can do is use a separate programs to put icons on the screen. I believe there is a program called "fbdesk" that will do this in cooperation with fluxbox.

ROX-filer can also do the trick.
There is also idesk, which is pretty. ;)

Window Managers do not do desktop icons.

(most) Desktop Environments do.

A Desktop environment is something like KDE or Gnome that provides a Window Manager, Panel, Unified application look, etc.

A Window Manager only controls moving, resizing, etc. of Windows.

Once you understand the proper terminology it makes sense.

Create your userland-icons while in Gnome (copy and edit the *.desktop files). In xfce or icewm or whatever just typenautilus --no-desktop ~/Desktop
Works for me...

I like idesk (http://idesk.sf.net).

You toss the command to start idesk into your ~/.xinitrc or ~/.xsession file, and away you go. :)

I've used it in sawfish, pekwm, enlightenment (16).... It should work with most of them. E17 it doesn't work with, because it uses pseudo-transparency and e17 uses true transparency, though, there aren't that many apps that can handle that yet.
