Hey all, just a quickie here, runnin FC3 and no matter what I do, unless I specify before I login that I want to log in with KDE, it auto-defaults to gnome. Is there some hidden file somewhere taunting me with curses and vulgarities because a little gnome is controlling it? Or is there some as-yet-undiscovered by me utility/configuration tool that will allow me to change this?

i have that problem with Vida-linux - the default is gnome but i use xfce, so insted of typing startx i have to start startxfce4, which isn't bad. So it doesn't matter to me.

hm. I have FC set to graphical bootup and login mode, so is there a way to do this without shutting X down and restarting it?
Since you're set to graphical boot mode, you should be able to click the "Sessions" button at your login screen, and then select whichever desktop you wish to use. Then, after you enter your username and password, it will ask you if you would like your selection to be your new default. You can then select yes.
If that doesn't work, you might need to edit the .xinitrc file in your home directory, or the one in /etc/X11/xinit. And once you are booted in Gnome, there is probably a desktop selection tool in there somewhere.

hm. I'll have to edit the .xinitrc file then, since I can't find Gnome's chooser. Thanx!

Hm. Had to go a bit of a roundabout way to do it, but i got it done by finding the xinitrc file in /X11, then it was referring to the xconfig file, which pulled ITS $DESKTOP reference from the /etc/sysconfig/desktop file for a default window manager.
Didn't seem to find an xinitrc file in my home directory though, but I'll look agin...

i did use gdm for a while and im guess you use kdm, i got rid of gdm becuase it was easier to restart x with out killing gdm so i just unmerged it. i recommend getting rid of kdm if you don't use more then one WM

You may not have one. I didn't know if your distro installed one. Slack, for instance, does not.
