I've been messing with Samba for a while now, without much success, but a friend has just sent me a good link about how to set samba up, gui styley, with windows XP.
I want to sort mine with W98SE, but how do I start from scratch i.e. dump all the files/settings/workgroups and also change the W98SE machines user account/name please?
regards
John
p.s. this (http://www.tweakhound.com/linux/samba/page_1.htm) is the link that my mate found and sent me - It looks pretty good, except the laptop that I want to use the samba with, is as I say, W98SE not XP.
Hence I want to dump all the previous settings etc that I've tried (and failed) with.

Assuming you already have Samba installed on a local box. There is a directory, usually called, /usr/share/doc/samba , that has a good collection of guides and howto's. You might want to start with this one;
/usr/share/doc/samba/docs/htmldocs/using_samba/toc.html

And Orieley has the "Using Samba" book online for free

Sorry I'm not quite sure I follow.
I have the info from the SuSE forums link on how to set this up i.e. if it was my 9.3 install and win XP. I suspect I can work out how to mod that, but I'd like to know how to get rid of any files/config or where to look because I suspect that's why I've failed miserably in the past to get this set up. I didn't document and just found various suggestions and tried them all - resulting in failure.
Surely, the docs and stuff in the 9.3 install will only tell me what too set up file and config wise, for the Linux install ? but if I don't know what files I may or may not have already set up in the W98 laptop I can't see how I can go back too square 1 ???

No, the Samba docs will tell you what things need to be changed on the Windows side of things. Like, if needed what registry keys should be modified, what things on the windows client side need to be altered, etc.
The Samba docs are a very good source for not only how to set it up on the Linux side but as I said on the Windows side.

Also samba.org (http://samba.org) has many tutorials on how to set up for a specific application such as a domain controller which is what it sounds like you are looking into. The smaba man pages are also very helpful.

Man pages - god I have them soooooooooo much! Sooo much information in such an incredibly archaic format.
I suspect that they'd be more readable if they were in sanskrit or something easy! :D
Seriously, samba.org? excellent I'll "weaving".
Thank you very much for the "directions"

I think it is safe to say the collective "we" who offered pointers were not referring to the standard man pages, as in "man smb.conf". If you were to buy the latest Samba book from ORiely it is almost or the same as you would find in /usr/share/docs/samba/.

Oh good, that's excellent new stumbles. I've got a link to the online O'Really book about Samba somewhere - so that should help some!
Weird really, because apparently Samba is one hell of a clever bit of software - which can be "hell on wheels" to "do" properly, though I've been assured that what I want to do is very basic and should be reasonably straight forward!
Thanks for the pointers and stuff, I'll post back when I've had a chance to try it (hopefully tomorrow)!
