As a Linux newbie on an AMD64 laptop with a few problems, I've started to read through the Linux Performance How To (http://justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?t=112346) , and I am now thinking I need to go back and try a different approach to installing linux (ubuntu) and perhaps a new distro.
Here's what I use my computer for:
I'm into web development- (databases, apache, ect.) and some minor graphic work, I'm not an artist.
I enjoy sitting back and watching dvds, listening to music, ect. (sometimes)
When I'm on the computer, I'm on for 2+ hours
And so, I was wondering whether I should stay with Ubuntu or find a new distro (recommendations?); and in both cases, how I should go about setting up the system?
I hope I was clear and not over demanding  (especially for a new forum user)
Here's how I got where I am today:
I'm a Linux newbie, on dial-up, and have only tried Arch 0.5 and Ubuntu Hoary. But here's the weird thing. I purchased an Arch CD offline a long time ago, but never got around to trying to install it untill 0.7 was out, and by that time there was no documentation related to 0.5. However, I pushed on and tried without luck to install it over time period of a week. Needless to say, I was frustrated but excited by the fact that I had so much control over my computer- just through a failed installation process!
Anyways, a few months later, I grab Ubuntu, installed it using their AMD64 edition- lagged a lot, couldn't get my SmartLink modem to work, ect (bunch of problems). So I just used their x86 edition- everything worked. However, my laptop quite literally burns my hands now, things are lagging, and I feel like I'm on Windows again.

First of all make sure that you have no errors/bugs going on and if you do have bugs please report them so those that know how to fix things can. Without stating specifically what's wrong, we need more than 'lagging' to get started. Tell us more about the laptop, let's see some specs. We should see the output of a dmesg to look for some errors as well. Ubuntu & your hardware should be more than enough to satisfy your performance needs according to your usage when things are working well. In my opinion anyway. :)
If you still want another distro, or we can confirm that it's actually Ubuntu's issue and not a general Linux and/or hardware issue Gentoo has a popular AMD64 platform as does Suse and Fedora I think - I dunno, I don't have one so I don't too closely. ;)

Might also want to check to see if the laptop_mode module is loaded and/or acpi is ok. My laptop (Centrino) ran hot until I enabled laptop_mode but then it cooled off quite a bit.

On, lets see what happens.

No bugs.

Okay. The lagging I am experiencing comes some of the time from opening, minimizing, and closing programs, but mainly minimizing; browsing through my menus; and while using BlueFish. In all cases, there is a pause between my action and when there is a response. BlueFish exibits the most lag to a point that I can barely type- almost all the time (any recommendations on another editor?).
Tell us more about the laptop, let's see some specs.

Just a quick answer regarding Bluefish, I've always found it a bit laggy. Not saying yours isn't made worse by your problem, just stating that Bluefish is known to be laggy. Pretty silly of it really. I still use it though and quite like it otherwise.
Are you sure you have the appropriate video setup for that ATi card? I see something about agpart unsupported SIS shipset and didn't notice any mention about ATi in your dmesg. Only glanced quickly though. Misconfigured video would give you your lag. What brand/model lappy?

Ah yes, I've had trouble with my video, and I thought I had straighten everything out, but then again maybe not (haven't had success in playing videos).
It's a custom built laptop- Uniwill 258KA0 (http://www.uniwill.com/products/performance/258ka0/258ka0.php?HL=1&P=2).
When I was messing with my video setup while installing Ubuntu, I was really confused, and don't remember to much about what I did, so we may have found my short comming.
Sorry for quoting such a long peice of text... doh.
