I've been using a cable connection until today, and have just got a new fibre optic connection.
What do I need to do to get a signal from the new FO modem? The lights are on on the modem and network card but when I try to refresh the connection with
ifdown eth0 && ifup eth0 it hangs and fails to connect.
I tried running the network card configuration from within harddrake, but there's no option for fibreoptic and trying to configure it as cable fails in the same way.

Can you post make and model of the modem and the output of "/sbin/mii-tool -vv". On a hunch only, you may need to use a cross-over cable from the nic card to the modem.

Thats how mine is setup. Verizon has a big box in my garage where the fibre goes into and that converts it to ethernet which plugs into a router (I almost yelled at the installer when he pluged in a D-Link router in my house :D) and the router is just a simple broadband/dsl router that handles the authentication with the Verizon network.
In my case if I wasn't able to get a dhcp responce I'd check to make sure the router is working since that is what assigns the addresses for your local network

Heh, it turns out I just had to wait overnight for them to activate it. All is well now.
I have another query now, hopefully it's ok to post it here.
With the new cabel connected, I want to set up my new email account and use it.
Using opera's mail client, I added the details of the new account, but when I try to send a mail from it I get a message saying "Relaying denied: IP possible forged".
I think my old IP is stored somewhere and I need to remove this reference to be able to send from the new account. Where is it, though?
I also can't access my old e-mail account (except via the web) and need some methd of either accessing it or forwarding everything to my new address.
