I just set up an old compaq presario 4824 (233 mhz pII, onboard video, onboard sound, 6gb hd) with Ubuntu. Everything works but the sound. Ubuntu doesn't seem to recognize the onboard sound card for this machine, and i have no idea how to figure out what kind of sound card it is, whether it's supported at all, or how to set it up if it is.

any advice would be much appreciated.

Here (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00259999) are the technical specs for your PC, from the HP/Compaq support site.

Here (http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?t=137197) is how to install ALSA from scratch. Use the ISA option rather than PCI. This has worked on every PC I have tried except one, which was an old Dell laptop with a Crystal sound chip.
