Hello,
The problem im having is that my xSeries 220 ibm machine freezes at boot-up.
As soon as i start it displays the bios screen sometimes saying 'Initializing memory ... ' or
with out previous message. All hardware i have installed in that box is a mobo, ram chip,
sudo processor (is that how you spell it), pIII processor and voltage regulator.

By taking out all ram chips it gives me error beep codes, which indicates that bios isnt dead.
And starting the computer none of the led lights on the mobo light up which is suppose to mean everything is right :/

Ive also tryed and reseting the bios to its default stage by taking out the batterty and wait for
around 15 minutes and changing the jumper; None help.

Well the question really is - why would the computer freeze at boot-up, and does anyone have any
suggestions on how to fix it.

Thanks guys!

ok, now im pretty sure its not RAM. i replaced the memory that was there with another chip that imho is compatible with that mobo. when i inserted another chip led lit up on motherboard indicating error in memory, now with old memory led didnt lit up.
So now i dont have many ideas left .. mmm

Thanks

I believe that either CPU or motherboard is faulty, my primary guess is CPU.
I take it you don't get as far as system trying to search for disks etc? Anyway, remove everything not needed, leaving only keyboard and monitor connected. (It means pulling IDE-cables and power-cords, remove soundcard, nic, whatever...)
Then boot, if it doesn't work borrow another CPU?

It could be the the RAM you tried as a replacement is not compatitble and that is why there is an error, but the original RAM is faulty. Perhaps a better test would be moving the RAM to another machine and running memtest (included on many livecd distros) on it.

Also what do you mean by "sudo processor", it tried googling for it and didn't get any relevant results, indeed the second result was for this very thread. If perhaps you mean sound processor, is it onboard sound or a PCI card, if it is a PCI card try removing it. Otherwise, it is probably the CPU or mobo.
