Hi all,

I'm having much trouble getting the latest ATI drivers to work on Suse 9.2 for my Radeon 9700 Pro.

I've downloaded and installed the driver and kernel module, and run fglrxconfig and created and xorg.conf file which is placed in /etc/X11 and seems to be referred to as my dual monitor setup now only works on 1 monitor (I told it to do so during fglrxconfig) but when I run glxinfo and fglrxinfo I get:

fglrxinfo:

I had a hell of a time installing ATI drivers, but I eventually figured it out...right about when ATI released new drivers that featured an easy installer.

go back to the website and download the new drivers. download the "any-platform" executable file, and install with that. let me know if that solves your problem.

you may also want to check www.devhardware.com, posts by LabRat404 ( thats me ) about the ATI Radeon 9800. thats where I resolved my issues. check the later posts.

Hi,

I'm already using the latest driver from www.ati.com.
The version I'm using is 8.14.13, I've installed the .run file and the .rpm as well... Still no joy even now.

What am I doing wrong? :(

run fglrxconfig as root from within the /etc directory, and when asked if you want to use an "external AGPGart module", say YES, and when asked to use something about "Error Pages", select NO

Well I've given up on Suse 9.2 and I'm about to install Mandriva Limited 2005.
Reason being, its a fresh install anyway and it was frustrating me no end as it *should* have been working...
I have to admit, it was easier to install ATI drivers in Gentoo on my laptop...

I've looked it up already, and Mandriva doesnt seem to have many problems with ATI drivers.

Will come back here if I need any further assistance...

Thanks for the help.

why does everyone go for the dumbed-down linuxes? SuSE, Mandrake(Mandriva, whatever) Red Hat, gah... I think of thoes distros and shudder at their bloatiness... oh well, I have my slackware and I'm not complaining :-)

Its worth noting that I use highly optimised installations of Gentoo on my main PC and laptop and run Debian on my other server. My 2nd main PC tho is my general purpose PC and so I like the fluffyness of Mandrake and Suse on it... I'm not going to experience them otherwise. ;)

Besides, I started my great penguin journey with a copy of Mandrake 7 so I thought I'd give it another try... See if its got any better...

It seems so far that it has. :)

I wont be around to mess with it till sunday though, so I'll updae here around then. :)

my first distro was Red Hat 6.1, obviously quite some time ago, and Red Hat made me LOVE linux, to know that there were other options out there other than MS Linux (heh). Then I tried Mandrake, bought the "Power Pack" edition of 8.1 for 60 bucks, it came on about 8 CDs.I installed all that crap, fooled around with Mandrake 8.1 for a while, didn't like it because it didn't come with the enlightenment window manager like Red Hat 6.1 did (and I didn't know I could just go to the website and dowload it ... I wouldn't have known how to compile it anyway at the time) and Red Hat under gnome with the enlightenment window manager just looked SO beautiful. My real troubles came when I tried to run liunxconf on Mandrake...which is a Red Hat-only command. some years later, last year actually, I installed slackware, and I've never been happier. I've considered trying debian, but I don't know if I could live without the BSD-style init scripts. I've also switched my main Desktop manager from Gnome to KDE, and I'm also using Flusbox occasionally (its so sleek and fast!)

anyway, there's my Linux story, if you care. good luck with the next install :-)

Hold on before you throw out a good distro!

Did you set up Sax2 correctly!
Under root:

#init 3
#sax2 -m 0=fglrx

Then while in sax2 turn on 3D acceleration, then go to your /etc/X11/XF86config, and under the Section "Module" make sure you have

Load "dri"

if that doesn't work go check Ati's FAQ, and that might help some more.

Well I've already installed Mandriva yesterday, however, I'm unhappy about the way its handling my Netgear WG311T PCI wireless card.
I installed it via using ndiswrapper, which was cleverly integrated into the network wizard (Nice work mandrake) and it works, however, when I restart the PC it refuses to find the card on startup, errors and continues to ignore its presence until I uninstall and re-install the card in the network wizard... Then it works and repeat back to step 1 after restart.

I will attempt to mess with it some more tommorow when I'm back at home but if it takes more than half an hour of fiddling, I'm going to re-install Suse 9.2 as that detected all my hardware perfectly (Including PCI wireless card)... Then I'll give your advice a go. :)

I think I may shrink my 'project' Gentoo partition a little in the process... Hmmm...

Ultimately, I just want a PC, running a nice fluffy distro that I can do general stuff and play some games using Winex/Cedega (Its part of my job:p). I already do all that on my IBM laptop in Gentoo but I want my PC which is a little more powerful to do it without any hassle... I use Gentoo for hassle... Suse/Mandrake are meant to be fairly hassle-free.
