Linky (http://www.image4u.org/ryant/sshot.png) blackbelt_jones 07-14-2005, 09:59 PM When I got my new computer running with an Asus MoBo and Rosewill PSU, I messed around with several debian distibutions, installing back and forth for a few days, trying to find something I could live with. The one I settled on was Simply Mepis, which comes with an nVidia driver and the Mozilla Plug-in for mplayer. This last item is very important to me, since without it I have to interrupt whatever I'm doing and log into Windows in the middle of the day in order to listen to my favorite liberal talk radio host, Ed Schultz. You can get mplayer off those mplayer repositories, but, apparently not the Mozilla plug-in-- and compiling it involves a whole Wagnerian Ring Cycle of downloading, unzipping, installing and cvs-ing just to get the dependancies. When I tried it according to the tutorial, some of the things I needed didn't appear to be where they were supposed to be. But I have Simply Mepis... so no problem, right? But now that I had settled on a distro, the Gnome desktop that installed and integrated into Mepis with apt-get on Sunday suddenly wouldn't install at all on Monday. The error message said "a broken package". This is the sort of thing that seems designed to drive me crazy. I dislike KDE, and love Gnome, and so another few days more of obsessive installing, reinstalling, and elaborate attempts to repair the problem ensued, so I could have my perfect Linux system for my perfect computer, which finally appears to be working perfectly. I went back to Sarge for a couple of days, but I just couldn't get the plug-in working, and I resented being forced to log into Windows at what should be the most productive part of the day. And then, I had an epiphany: KDE isn't that bad. Anyway, it seems logical to me that one day soon this broken package problem with the repositories will be repaired, and then I'll get my gnome back. In the meantime, it's all the same point-and-click. I got the idea that a black and white photo for a background would make a KDE desktop look less annoyingly KDE-ish. I think it worked. I found this terrific picture of two good-looking young people simply by doing a Google image search for "black and white". http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/7021/snapshot27ss.png http://img277.imageshack.us/img277/4636/snapshot14pg.png pezplaya 07-14-2005, 10:16 PM blackbelt, by your kde menu button, how did you get the icons little like that in 2 rows?
