In other distrobutions, like mandrake, I could write to a blank disk by copy and paste(sometimes, it didn't work at random times). In slack, I can't mount a file system and it seems to have no formatting options("format" didn't even show up in a search of kde's help files). I've tinkered with the cdrom settings in fstab and searched google. I found nothing of value other than a few unrelated helpful bits of information. This stupid error is becomeing an annoying headache. What do I do next?

Are you trying to format floppys or blank CDs?
Formatting a floppy (or other harddisk partitions) is usually done by 'mke2fs'.
Writing to a CDR is usually done by 'cdrecord'.

As you mentioned KDE help files, I gather you're using KDE... try out k3b, which is a very easy to use burning app.
(assuming you're referring to CD-R(w)'s)
For floppies, try poking around a bit more in Konqueror (I'm not at my desktop, on WinXP now, but I believe there's something fairly obvious in right-click menu)

Yeah, I meant cd-rws, sorry. I saw one for floppies. Doesn't kde come with k3b; it did with mandrake, but it's not in the application popup menu or the kde help center. I just don't want to download and install it again if it's hidden in kde 3.4.
k3b didn't come with my slack 10.1 install. Just slapt-get it or pick it up from linux packages (http://www.linuxpackages.net)

I got it, and I wrote to the disk, but when I checked to make sure everything copied ok (since mandrake did some pretty borky stuff), it had two files with names of all question marks, then when I right clicked on the cd icon on my desktop and tried mounting or unmounting, it did nothing. When I tried to eject, it wouldn't, and when I tried to right click on the icon and press eject it said that it stopped unexpectedly. Properties of the disk shows it to have the same amount of files and the same size. Then kde crashed and stopped entirely and I re-started it and just now(after I wrote the above) I right clicked unmount and then eject and it did it with no problems. What the heck just happened here?
