Before I give up and buy a real wireless network PC card,
could someone decode this garbage:
I added $startcmd to the error message so that hopefully someone
would see an obvious problem that I'm missing.
IBSS not started, resultcode=invalid_parameters
startcmd=/sbin/wlanctl-ng wlan0 dot11req_start ssid=(paranoid edit)
bsstype=independent beaconperiod=100 dtimperiod=3 cfpollable=false
cfpollreq=false cfpperiod=3 cfpmaxduration=100 probedelay=100

Or, recommend an easily installed recent model wireless pc card.
