Yes, but you need to either buy a commercial app like VolumeWorks or iPartition or backup all your data on some media other then your hard drive, delete your HD, reinstall MacOS and install Linux. It is not easy.

lets say.... you have a 160 GB external firewire hard drive and you want to install ubuntu on 1 partition that is 20 GBs. can you also install another type of OS on a seperate 20 GB partition? and then use the remaining 140 GBs for storage? it of course would be perfect if you could go between different computers.
Is this all possible? it seems too good to be true to me, a noob to the world of non-windows ( I just installed ubuntu on my old dell). if this IS possible, could you briefly explain how to start doing this, or point me in a direction to learn? Thanks!

In a nutshell, yes, you can do this. Any PPC Linux's documentation should at least go into brief detail about how to do it. But, like the_lemur mentioned, you would have to use some kind of commercial partitioning software if you already had data on the drive you wanted to install to.

Did you have a distribution of Linux in mind? If so, check out their website for a great place to start. Most, like Gentoo, Debian, and Ubunto have great documentation that should get you going.
