I am trying-unsuccessfully-to access .jpg files that are loaded on a cdrom in my cd driver. When I click the icon on the desktop, it defaults to AmaroK, which of course hasn't a clue what a .jpg file is, and says so in so many words. "Retrieving data from devices is not supported" is the message I get. I'm not given the option anywhere that I can see to enlist another medium.
Google hasn't been able to figure out what I'm asking.
What do I do now?

Which distro, etc? On many main distros, such as Mandrake, if you enter the CD with the Konqueror file browser, it should be set up by default so assocations point the browser at a utility which will display your jpg in the browser window. Somewhere in the control utilities will be a function to set up your associations.
Also, right click the file, and see if it gives you a browse function for OPEN WITH...
But, with your distro, there will be those who can tell you exactly what to do.

What the heck is amarok? Can you try to open them on gimp or eog or something?

I'm using Mandrake 10.1
No, I don't have an 'open with' option on the right-click context menu. (When I right-click on the desktop icon). The only option I have is "Open", and it defaults to amarok. Obviously, that association has somehow been made (I guess because the first thing I did with my cd driver was to pop some music cd's into it).
I [somehow] need to expand the utility of the icon by associating it with other medium, and that's what I can't figure out.
Since this is .jpg (graphics) stuff I'm dealing with, the CLI is of no use. I tried that route, and-of course-got nowhere, other than to mount /mnt/cdrom (which, of course, the right-click context menu can also do).

What the heck is amarok?
amarok is a lightweight media (music) player. Music cd's (in the cd drive) default to it.

mount /mnt/cdrom
gimp /mnt/cdrom/[filename].jpg.... or go via the 'Start' menu -> Multimedia -> Graphics and select one of the viewers there. Then just browse your CD from the application you selected.

I'm guessing that the CD icon on your desktop isn't a "true" CD device icon, but is actually a shortcut to AmaroK.
Assuming you're using KDE, you should right click on your desktop and create a new device. You want it to be a CD-ROM drive device. It's okay to have more than one of these icons on the desktop.
If you create this icon correctly, then clicking on it will spend a few seconds mounting the CD-disk and then open up the Konqueror file browser. To eject this disc, first close all Konqueror windows accessing the CD drive files and then right click on the CD desktop icon. Under the "actions" menu will be "eject". You'll need to close any other programs accessing files on the CD also, of course.
