I am very interested in hardware, after reading the above link I wondered how many Linux users will be buying one of the new AMD64 X2 chips (or a Pentium D) when they are availible in volume? Which chip would you go for and what would you run on them apps, distros? Basically do duel cores have their place yet? Think of the folding potential!

What about this cell processor (http://www-1.ibm.com/businesscenter/venturedevelopment/us/en/featurearticle/gcl_xmlid/8649/nav_id/emerging), next generation, baby.
You can google it for more details.

Yeah. Been watching that progress for a while now, I think thats gonna take a couple of years before its of use to people like us. Still if it does take off big time then cool. When do you think there will be the First Linux Distro for the Cell (if ever)?

Any of them, from what I tead recently on the cell, the Linux kernel as from 2.4 is already capable of running on the cell. Micorosoft will have to write a new kernel to run on the cell...

Anyone got any comments about the AMD64 X2 at all I mean this is huge! Isn't it?

Meh. It's not all that different from a real SMP system... except it doesn't have as much cache. (It has less than the sum of the two processors's caches in the SMP system, that is.) ;)

These will run in existing nForce socket 939 mobos with only a BIOS update. Intel will require a new chipset (motherboard) for the 840 dual-core. (Soon to be yet another mass market chip, by another name)
AMD started work on the current dual-core strategy way back in 1999, according to a recent web event. Lowest cost per watt. And cool - where Intel's dual-cores run so hot that the fastest has a slower clock than its single core counterpart.
The AMD64 X2 is huge!!
