i have red hat with the 2.2.5 kernel and I want to upgrade to the latest version. Do I have to upgrade to the kernels in between first ?

no but you will have to upgrade some other software on your system before you can go from a 2.2.x to a 2.6.x. there is a how-to that someone posted on here a while ago that lists exactly what needs to be upgraded. try searching the forums.
