I recently bought a brand new video card;Nvidia GeForce 5500 OC from BFG. This one (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=316274&pfp=BROWSE)

I use proMepis b4 2.6.10. When I first installed the card, I reinstalled mepis and everything worked fine; it installed the driver, I had the nvidia boot-screen and everything worked great. Now its the March break and I had VB assignments to do, so I decided I had to move the partitions around on my disc so that my windows partition had some more room on it. So I had to reinstall all my OS's; no problem, so I thought. So I reinstalled mepis and this time, for some reason, it will not install the nvidia driver, no matter what I try. I have googled, I have searched Justlinux and I have followed several tutorials to try and get things going. No luck. I learned how to config and install a new kernel along the way! That's the great news! But still, no matter what I try, just can't get this grphx card to work. Arrgghh! Now I really think its something wrong with the hardware. I mean, why would mepis install the driver fine the first time but not now? Plus, its doing some things that seem a bit sketchy. Have any of you had this kind of thing happen? Any similar horror stories? Good thing the card has lifetime waranty, cause I'm sending it back tomorrow.

How's the driver failing? Check /var/log/nvidia-installer.log if you used the installer, otherwise post the compilation errors you're getting.

Thanks for replying. I have attempted to install the driver several times now, following several different tutorials. One time I actually did get it installed and it was loading the kernel module at boot and everything, but then X wouldn't start and it said that the nvidia-kernel version didn't match my kernel.
I'm actually sending the grfx card back, its under warranty, and this is because when it was working , some unusual stuff was happening. Oh, well, I put my old radeon back in and will just have to make due for now, since I have been neglecting the rest of my life for a few days now trying to figure this out and need to get other things done. Thanks again, and I'll post again on this if I make any progress.
