I have a need to set up an old Dell Dimension 8100 desktop as a webserver, and knowing as little as I do about RDRAM I would like some input:

pertinent specs NEW:
P4 1.5GHz
128mb 800mHz RDRAM
10Gb 7200rpm HDD
cdrom, tape backup, Geforce 2MX 32mb AGP video card.

Compare to OLD:
PIII 450MHz
384mb PC133 SDRAM
13.5Gb 5400rpm HDD
cdrom, Geforce 2MX 32mb AGP.

The question:
128MB RDRAM seems awfully slim, but at the same time RDRAM is (supposedly) pretty fast. RDRAM is prohibitively expensive, so I doubt I'll be adding any in the forseeable future.

Now, am I looking at a significant step up with the NEW computer? Or will it be choked to death by it's lack of ram? Will the NEW computer be more or less able than the OLD to handle an xwindow environment, such as Gnome, or KDE? or XFCE?

Again, purchasing more RDRAM is highly unlikely in the very near future, so I'm looking at thoughts based on specs AS IS.

Many thanks,
~M

If it's just a webserver, 128 should be fine, especially if you don't have X running all the time.

if it's just a webserver, don't even bother with X

take off the monitor and keyboard and in stall webmin to admin it (and use ssh if you absolutely need a console).

Anything made by humans will have faults.

I use Dell too. They're a really good company, I just hate the way they give away Windoze with their machines.

It really bugs me...
