An internal USR modem is almost definitely a softmodem (aka 'winmodem'). See http://www.linmodems.org and the list at http://start.at/modem for more details.

have you read the helpfile I prescribed just now? It includes the methods I think...

What model USR modem? What do you get with

dmesg | grep tty

???

He has gone over that already. Its a USR modem. and its an isapnp one....USR3031...

I just can't believe that we already have it documented at the JL.com helpfiles

a quick google would seem to suggest that the relevant module to load is 8250_pnp - check whether it is loaded with lsmod | grep 8250 and if not, then modprobe 8205_pnp and see if that helps.

pnpdump is in the package isapnptools

you must install that before you can do anything.

USR was probably one of the last mfrs to follow the softmodem crowd, IIRC. Their hardware modems (currently sold) still class amongst the best in the business.

http://www.usr.com/products/home/home-product.asp?sku=005687-03
and
http://www.usr.com/products/home/home-product.asp?sku=USR5610B
are their current internal hardware modem offerings; while
http://www.usr.com/products/home/home-product.asp?sku=USR5660A
and
http://www.usr.com/products/home/home-product.asp?sku=USR5699B
are their current internal winmodem/softmodem (there is a distinction between the two) offerings.

In essence, your probability is more like 50-50 for late model USR internals.

To the OP:
Which kernel are you running?
