I just got done installing Gentoo + KDE on an IBM T-21 with a USB MS Mouse attached. When I launch KDE, the mouse jumps all over the place when I move the USB mouse or the onboard mouse. Is there an option I need to set for the touchpad or something?
Thanks!

the thing is that you have more than 1 mouse in the system.
which device file did you use for the mouse in xorg.conf?
other than that, what are available at /dev/input/
than try each mouse available at /dev/input and get the one you want, and you can then put it into xorg.conf

I'll give that a shot and let you know what I find. I'm not sure why this is an issue with Gentoo but not any of the other distros I tried.

I think its because gentoo is more intrusive? :D

Idon't think it's gentoo's intrusiveness, once I gave them my credit card numbers, they shut up. :D
Instead it's most likely your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. SOmething's a bit off in the mouse section. I'm sure a G4L search will turn up the culprit.

Is gpm running? I used to have the same symptoms if it were and I was in X...

I had this problem after isntalling Gentoo once, and I thought it was a kernel issue so I wiped Gentoo out for Mandrake again. THen I discovered that the mouse pade I had been using has cuts and scrapes in it and my optical mouse would "jump" over those bumps. So check your mouse pad if your mouse is optical.

I've seen symptoms similar to this when I was using the wrong driver (in XF86Config's InputDevice section) for the mouse...

I just need to figure out which driver to use. I took out the mouse and I'm trying to figure out what will work with the onboard mouse.
I'm kind of new at this hardware config stuff. I think the most complicated thing I've done was get sendmail to route internal mail to all the machines in our class and forward to an exchange server for external mail.....and that was years ago.
I'm a born again newbie :D

Last time I had this problem (it has happened with both my old MS optical, and with a customers ball mouse) it was just on its last legs, and it was time for a new mouse.

Unfortunatly, its doing it with the onboard mouse as well and I'm using /dev/mouse with the "mouse" driver.

cat /dev/input/mice
and move your mouse around...if you get junk onscreen that's it.
also try /dev/psaux

Does the Option "Protocol" value match the mouse type that you're using?

The T-21 I was using has a bard hard drive so the mouse issue has been resolved

just a note for anybody else, the last time a had this problem on my laptop I had setup the mouse as a wheel mouse by accident. so when i would use the touchpad, the cursor would bounce all over the screen
