Hi, Im making an online RPG (text based PHP/MySQL game)

I would just like some info on what people think about hosting the web page from my computer...

Will it be hacked etc...?

Thanks in advance,

NotJustANewbie :D

All the 'professionals' use http://sourceforge.net
why use a personal machine when you can get hosting, backups and bug reports?

Oh, and mirrors...gotta love the mirrors :)

Couple things:
1. Yes you probably will get hit by automated worms, but chances are if you you keep your system patched up tight and apache/php/mysql at the latest stable version your distro supplies nothing bad will happen.
2. Check with your isp about running servers. I used to host a site too until my isp "informed" me about their no server policy.
3. dyndns.org supplys free subdomains for personal web servers. ;)
4. A web server can be a big thing to run. Keep in mind that if you need php you have to have that working properly, same with mysql. It's best to have a computer dedicated to running all this as opposed to running it off your normally used machine.

5. what kind of connection do you have. are you going to have enough bandwidth to handle what you plan on serving.

I have 1.1 Mbit/s connection...

I don' t think that it fast enough...

Anyway, thanks for the adavice, I think I'm going to buy hosting. The site runs perfectly locally and not so well on a free php/mysql host I checked out (100webspace.com). I'm opting for fasthosts.com becuase linux magazine seems to agree its the best.

I haven't thought of sourceforge hosting... How does it work? How much is it? sf.net does not seem to have many answers for me at the moment anyway.

Thanks again,

NotJustANewbie

p.s. - NICE COMPUTER SPEC. GOGETA_44 !!!

sourceforge is an application process, you fill out a form and they will tell you whether you get hosting from them or not. buying hosting is always a good choice, at least it was with me. if you check out http://oleahosting.com and tell them riscphree sent you, you may get a discount ;)

riscphree, Thanks a lot for your offer, its just I'm from UK and I'd prefer if it was more local and I could easily pay in my currency.

Thanks for info on sf.net though - where is the form to fill out, URL?
