Hey there,
i am right now hosting 4 web sites with apache and i use zoneedit as my dns server. Can i set my system up to be a dns server itself? i have looked but dont know exactly where to start. so..

here is the catch. i am on a dsl 750 up and 750 down.
pretty cool there. but on rare occations that i have to reboot, my ip address changes . so without spending the cash to upgrade to a static ip - nuther $20/month - i have a python script that updates my DNS whenever my ip changes.

can i do this as a dns server myself?

Thanks
any suggestions?

I do, i've got comcast cable internet, with a dynamic IP, it changes a couple/few times a year, but its not too big of a deal.

The only thing is I have to email my registrar when my IP changes, to tell them to change my nameservers IP(which, is me..)

All you need is BIND.

(warning: dns is the devil.)

so i could get a script to do that automatically ?

i havnt checked lately. i am running vector linux 4.3/ had it installed for about a week. last reboot was 4 days ago.
just wondering about there being an advantage to running a dns server (bind) over just using zonedit.
thanks by the way

http://www.dyndns.org/

See their "dynamic DNS" and/or "custom DNS" services. "Static DNS" is the same set of services as "dynamic", it's just that it will take longer for DNS changes to propagate to the rest of the world (so it makes sense if your IP address changes much less frequently).

Both dynamic and static DNS through dyndns.org require that you use one of the dyndns.org domains -- if you have your own domain name already, you can use a client (they have a whole huge list of clients, along with what features each of them supports) that's aware of "custom DNS", and use their "custom DNS" service, to make the IP address pointed to by that name changeable.

There are other alternative services that do much the same thing; no-ip.org is one of them that I remember others talking about here.
