i'm having trouble viewing a couple websites, all under the same host.

i'm sorry, i was wrong about one thing.

i CAN ping the websites via name and it returns the IP address.

but i can't view the site via wget or firefox if i try to access by name

Does your /etc/resolv.conf file have the correct DNS servers for your ISP?

i can only assume so? my network setting is dhcp and for dns to resolve automatically.

the file in question (/etc/resolve.conf) is generated by /sbin/dhclient-script

and gives me three nameservers for my isp

i don't actually know how to verify those are correct.

Could be a problem with your ISP' DNS servers, and not your setup/config. (Even if things seems to work OK from a Windows box).

curious you'd mention the windows box not having a problem, because that is happening, even though it's pointing at the same nameserver.

so, resolution is to contact my ISP and chat with them? *really looking forward to that conversation* "uhh, sorry sir, we don't support linux....."

just to follow up, i contacted roadrunner "tech support" and sure enough, got the "we don't support linux" answer.

Switch to an ISP that know what they're doing? ;)

that might be an alternative, but i found the reason it was happening (or, rather, a more knowledgeable linux user did) .

it was a firewall issue. i use firestarter to manage my firewall and it has a list of ip's it declares "non-routeable", for some reason.

my new ip address was in that list
