I recently took a personality test. There was a description that came with the results, which indicated that a prominent preoccupation of mine would be to tinker with computers (the description was freakishly accurate). This got me thinking: Do most Linux (or Unix) users have similar personalities? So, just for fun, I am starting a poll to find out.

The test that I took was based off of the Myers-Briggs stuff. I've heard that the real test takes around 3 hours. Fortunately, I took one that took me around 5 minutes (the link is included below). If you've taken the test before, post your results. If you haven't follow the link below and post your results. The results may not be completely accurate but we may be able to see a pattern.

Quote from the description of INTJ:

They are rather rare, comprising no more than, say, one percent of the population.

(looking at the survey results)

Just a coincidence that so many of us would use GNU/Linux? :D I'd say there's something to your theory, nabetse.

I'd say there's something to that theory also.

Stupid web page. I got to the end and it said INTP, but it also said I missed a question and click on the back button to answer it, which I did, and of course all my initial answers were gone and then the forward button was grayed out. I guess it's probably based on stupid cookies, which I rarely accept.

Oh well...

I don't need no stinkin' personality test. ;)

From somewheres on that there site
On the other hand they have less and less desire, if they ever had any, to direct the activities of others. Only when forced to by circumstance do they allow themselves to take charge of activities, and they exit the role as soon as they can without injuring the enterprise.

Yeah, that sounds about right...

INTJ. Why does it take a friggin' test to know that most computer geeks are somewhat introverted?????

It should be obvious. Of course, my intuitive was 67. :)

Great test, I was surprised of how accurate it was.
Some very true realizations about me:

Effusive expression of emotional warmth is not something that ISTJs do without considerable energy loss.

ISTJs are most at home with "just the facts, Ma'am."

His SJ orientation draws the ISTJ into the service of established institutions. Home, social clubs, government, schools, the military, churches -- these are the bastions of the SJ.

Pretty amazing ;-).

what do those strength preferences numbers mean?

Sepero
02-03-2005, 07:25 PM
I find this to be a very interesting(and somewhat saddening) poll. From this poll, I am assuming that Linux only has a great deal of appeal to about 1/4 of the population.

(Either that, or forums and polls only appeal to 1/4 of the population. ;))

Though, being the "INTJ rationalist" that I am, I wonder what else could be done to bring Linux to more people?

Perhaps "rationalists" just have a natural tenancy to go against the grain, almost rebellious like? On the other hand, maybe "rationalists" are just more likely than other types to venture into new realms, instead of being herded like sheep?

bwkaz
02-03-2005, 08:11 PM
Sepero, this is just a guess, but I believe the reason is that "rationalists" really really hate stuff that doesn't work. ;)

Most of the world is content to have their operating system blue-screen once per month, or (in the case of the new server we got at work) totally lock up whenever you access the RAID 5 array too heavily, or be wide open to attacks from any and every angle, pay very little heed to patching known holes, and open every single attachment that gets mailed to them. I think "rationalists" actually do this kind of thing (at least... I do, and I'm an INTJ ;)), and get very sick of it.
