So my main monitor let out a nice pop the other night, and now my screen is getting its shrink on. Think I lost my high volltage. Any way, I picked up some hours at my old job so im going to buy me a new one. I spend about 6 hours a day infront of it. (36 hour student). If you had the choice would you go with a 17" LCD or a Big A** CRT. I've got 400-500 to spend.
Any suggestions

I have both and the LCD is noce but it is not a sharp as a nice BIG A** CRT espically a Flat Screen. SO I would window shop both and then make the determination based on your likse and dislikes of both.

I just migrated from two 17" Dell flat screen CRT's to two 17" Dell UltraSharp LCDs and the LCDs are MUCH sharper with very bright colors. I wouldn't go back for anything.
The LCDs are much easier on your eyes also, you don't get the strain that you do with with CRTs.
I don't know if this is still valid, but here's a link from the 24th about Dell's 19" LCDs going for $377.

Personally, I'd go with a CRT. I'm addicted to high resolution, and there simply doesn't exist a reasonably affordable LCD screen that can compete with 2048x1536 loveliness (see my recent how-to for how to squeeze that out of even low end CRT displays).
I just wish that CRT displays weren't so big and bulky. :(

If you play games and go LCD then make sure get a fast Response Time, say 12ms or so, not 25.
I think it's milliseconds, might be something else, but you want something less than 25.... from what I've read.

Funny that this post should just come up now. I just bought this 17" monitor from here (http://www.gemstarusa.com) and it's just fine. The model I bought was the GM170B 17 Inch LCD. Believe it or not, with the rebate, it's around $160.00!! Author Edit: The rebate is through PCMall but you only have until 1-31-2005 to buy one. The PCMall link to the monitor is here. I got a 17" LCD (LG Flatron L1719S) and I think that they are so much better than CRTs, because my eyes dont hurt anymore, the colors are so vivid, and mine was only 280 dollars off of NewEgg, and they are even less now.
Not to mention the desk space it saves you.

Go with the lcd. They are much better. Some of the benifits are:
-take up less space
-are much easier on your eyes
-probably take less power
-definately make less heat

I have a 17inch LCD, a viewsonic 171s, I think it the best bit of kit I have ever bought.
It is very sharp, very bright and got a 16ms response time and no dead pixels, After using this LCD, CRT monitors are simply awful too look at.
Definitely a LCD unless you play a lot of games

I'm planning on getting a LCD screen for my next computer and I wanted to know about the "ms" or milliseconds you guys are talking about especially for gaming?
I do play a lot of games on linux.

The way I look at it, the only thing that LCDs do better than CRTs is take up little space. SO, if space is not an ussue (or power consumption, I guess), a CRT will always (costwise, contrastwise, refreshratewise, variable resolutionwise) be a better choice than an lcd. Just my outlook on this.

no, I believe LCDs are better for the eyes too!
For all normal uses, go lcd if you can. if you are really an avid gamer/ have too little cash/ have special uses, then go crt.
but anyway, the timings for lcds are decreasing so much it can be even used for games too!

It's here:
High Resolution with an old CRT monitor and Radeon (http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=137493)
Even though I say "Radeon" in the title, other video cards do support interlace. Just not nVidia (not with the Linux drivers).

If you in a room with fluorescent lighting the LCD monitor is much easier on the eyes.

I bought a sony 17inch g220 a few years ago for $380 and I'm very happy with it. I just have one advice: don't buy a cheap monitor. It's much better spending 100$ more than regretting your buy afterwards. For me there is nothing more important in a pc, than a good monitor with a matching vga card(matrox in my case).

yeah im trying to stay with decent monitor, im looking at LCDcause Im at the computer so much. I was looking at 19" they are getting cheap. but the contrast, brightness, and refresh on them is pretty bad. so I think im going with a more expensive 17".planar probaly.plus they come with 3 year/2day replacement warranty. they arent real expensive and my wife has one at work that has held up great and has a great image. Im going to check sundays ads before i make my decision.

I just picked up an ACER AL1714 (17") from a Computer Show in Memphis (TN) a couple of weeks ago. Paid $239 for it (cash). It replaced a 17 " CRT and I can tell you the difference is amazing. I get 1280X1024 resolution and, even with my aging eyes, I can see the type without having to squint or put on my "readin' glasses". They had a 19" for $90 more but I just couldn't see paying that much extra for no more "viewable" space. I mean it was nice and all, but not $90 nice ;).
Desktop is nice and bright, EXCELLENT resolution, and it has 15 ms response time. I saw some cheap 17"er's there (around $175) that the response time was so slow on them that when you moved a window around on the desktop it did it in blocks, they were AWFUL! As they say "caveat emptor".

I still prefer CRTs, LCDs are irritating to me, and for gaming they aren't the best. Plus they are quite a bit more expensive than CRTs still. With 500, i'd get a pair of 21s, shopping on pricewatch.com it's doable maybe :) or a pair of nice 19s. Get a lot more screen space for your dollar.

I've been searching for a while and came up with this display that's recomended by tom's hardware and a bunch of other sides:
Viewsonic VX715 (http://www.viewsonic.com/products/desktopdisplays/lcddisplays/xseries/vx715/)
I think a dvi input is important because you won't have any problems with colors that way. I've worked with iyama, lg, and viewsonic displays and I must say that viewsocnic looks very good. (viewsonic is a tarde mark but they slect one of the best panels)
Just my view.

Thanks for the input. Today I recieved my viewsonic ve710. it works great and after installing the nvidia drivers i got my resolution up to 1280x1024 and it looks great.

Home usage: I'd prefer CRT.
Office usage: You must go for LCD. No gaming going on there and less energy consumption.
Having an airco fighting the heat generated by CRT's all day cannot be justified to "mother earth" now can it?
I'd love to have a black LCD monitor, they're just beautiful :)

I spend 8-10 hours a day in front of the the screen, and I notice my eyes are much less tired when that screen is LCD. Most likely due to the lack of flickering that CRT's inevitably have due to their design.
NewEgg has some exceptional prices and you should be able to get a 19" LCD in your price range...

I am in the market for an LCD screen also. The only disadvantage I see for myself is that with CRTs, you can change the resolution and they all look decent, but with a LCD there is only one optimum resolution. I am a 800x600 man myself so this could be a problem.
But with an LCD there are some obvious pluses:
light weight
cool looking
more power efficient
takes up less space

My current, work-supplied LCD runs equally well at either 800x600 or 1024x768...

I thought that was going to be a problem for me also. i normally run windows at 800x600 and linux at 1024x768.( some reason gnome is easy for me to read even at higher resolutions.) but when i got my monitor home last night i played with it abit and have it running 1024x768 under windows and 1280x1024 under linux. I did change font sizes and a few browser settings for my old eyes, but other that that I love the higher res. so far.

no the feeling, im taking 34 hours of classes right now and most of them are online, so i spend alot of time in front of my PC.
