I did not realize ATI released some new video drivers, they even show linux_32 and linux_64 as options for driver downloads.

You think the petition helped? Way to go ATI! Stuff's getting better all the time.

(Have I been asleep and youz guys already talked about this? ) )

These arent that "new"...i have these running on RH9 with ATI 9800.

not sure how to test it tho...but AA works fine.

Edit: not terribly useful, but I have a Dell laptop with ATI mobility, but ATI does not provide drivers for that.

I don't remember whether it was discussed here, but the news certainly made a splash on the Usenet newsgroups.

I only use lowly low end Ati Radeons, for which the open source drivers have satisfied my modest needs. I don't have to go through any trouble installing the open source drivers, of course. :)

happybunny-
I thought I had read another post here that said the linux drivers would work for the mobility chipsets even though the windows drivers are provided by Dell. I believe (could be wrong :( ) it was Icarus who had used the ATI-provided linux drivers with a mobility card.

edit: It was Icarus in this thread. (http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=135604&highlight=ati+mobility)

Yea, I have them working on my ATI Radeon 9000 mobility chip.
They have support for the chipset and I did notice in the changelogs that the mobility chips are supported. I have not heard anything if that means they have the power management working now or if we still need to use 'hacks'...

The new drivers finally work nearly perfect :p

I can finally play ut2004 Onslaught maps without the drivers barfing the textures up :D

with the new drivers X was crushing everytime i had to log out of X then re login. Many ppl had the same problem . I also did not see any perfomance gains so i downgraded to the previous version that has been working excellent .

but ATI is finally working on getting the drivers better

WOW I think I am suffering a heart attack! OpenGL actually works with these drivers!

Well half working. Doom 3 demo runs, but it looks like crap (I have the full game, but not gonna install it until my problems are ironed out).

And I get audio distortions. Maybe it is because of my onboard audio device? I'll try to figure them out tomorrow/

I am running an ATi Rage 128 Pro and I found out that there is an optimized driver in character devices in the kernel config and OpenGL worked like a charm.

279 frames in 5.0 seconds = 55.800 FPS

using radeon 9200 mobility, the "really slick screensavers" don;t work right. in full screen, it flickers and sometimes gives random transparent textures. works good in windowed mode. tuxracer and chromium work great in full screen.

they do not have gnu-linux-ppc drivers...
Now that is a splinter market if there ever was one.
They do not have them for BSD and that's their kissing cousin-linux PPC is the old maiden aunt. Why not use OSX if you still have it? At least you could play some games on it.

I may love OSX over any previous Mac OS but I don't plan to use it, but a nice dual boot might do me some good.
