I don't know why I just noticed this problem now, but my sound card SiS SI7012 (intel8x0 alsa module) appears to not work under the 2.6.10 kernel alsa. Originally I was getting an error at boot up when alsactl restore was ran about a version mismatch but I upgraded my alsa utils, lib, and oss compat packages to 1.0.8 and the message ceased; but I never got my sound back. About the only other error message I get is if I try to use madplay to play a file it tells me
tty: tcgetattr: Inappropriate ioctl for device
but I don't even know if that's related to this problem; all other media players don't give any errors, they just don't produce any sound.

dmesg output (http://www.wphs.com/s0nic0nslaught/dmesg-out-01-15)
2.6.10-ck1 kernel config (http://www.wphs.com/s0nic0nslaught/config-2.6.10-ck1)

this problem persists even on 2.6.10 vanilla and 2.6.11-rc1. sound worked under kernel 2.6.7

Have you run alsamixer and unmuted everything (sometimes it gets the stored settings reset after upgrades).
Are you sure it won't work as root (if it works as root but not as user then it's a permissions issue).

yes i have tried unmuting everything, in fact it was never mutued in the beginning. it does not work as root either. i get about 3 broken segments (about 1/2 a second long) of audio when i play an mp3 then it all stops and i get nothing.

Are you using the same kernel config as the previous kernel?
