Here (http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/index.php?vendor=All#matrix) is the ALSA Soundcard Matrix.

I want a PCI soundcard that supports hardware mixing and has a microphone port and at least a port for two speakers. What exactly should I get?

Thanks

Actually, for all sound card needs, we would recommend SBLive! Although I don't know if it has what you want.

This is because SBLive is so popular that support for it is excellent. But if you read the posts, I would avoid Live! 24-bit.

Actually, all cards I know of support at least 2 speakers, with 1 mic very commonly supported. however, hardware mixing? I'm not a hardware person, so I never heard of it

Find a card that has what you want, then check the hardware howto at www.tldp.org to see if it is supported.

My Yamaha el-cheapo card fits your requirements. It does hardware mixing (which means that both the OSS and Alsa drivers allow multiple processes to open the device file, so ESD/Arts are redundant and not required), it has a mic input, and it has one single output for stereo speakers. It also has a line-in and a joystick/MIDI port.

YMF-724F (DS-1) is the Yamaha part number. They generally run a few tens of dollars.
