Hey,

Well, I have had my "server" running for a week (HTTP, smb, thats it for now). Now I have not done much with it because of school, but I am proud of the uptime

cerf@loki:~$ uptime
06:29:39 up 9 days, 4:13, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00

Now considering, on my main machine, I shut it down when I sleep (its make too much noise in my room), and its a duel boot (win xp; vb dev (school)), my uptime has usually been around 4 hours.

Has anyone out there ever had a monster uptime. 100 days mabie? I'm sure its possible with the stability of linux/unix, I have just never heard of anyone who has done it

Here's the uptime of a shell server I have access to:

uptime
17:51:12 up 288 days, 20:21, 1069 users, load average: 1.00, 1.02, 1.00

one of my linux servers at work

uptime
18:52:39 up 194 days, 17:36, 2 users, load average: 0.81, 0.72, 0.69

Not all that impressive considering that you NEVER have to reboot Linux unless you're adding hardware or upgrading the kernel. Which brings to light, if you ever see a Linux box that's been up for more than 2 years, you know they're vulnerable to the ptrace hole ;)

this is my debian mail/fax server:

02:33:01 up 104 days, 11:33, 1 user, load average: 1.30, 1.19, 1.08

I have high hopes for this one. Its a bare minimum install and I only use the security updates so unless there is an extended power outage, she'll stay up a good while.

Same problem here. She's 14 months, and loves to press buttons (TV, monitors, computer, phone).

It not Linux's fault. :D If it weren't for her little fingers, power failures (no UPS), and breaker trips (only 100 amps in this place), who knows how much uptime I would have.

Was forced to reboot after I knocked the network card out of its PCI slot while plugging in my headphones.....

Have not yet had to reboot this machine other than for going on holiday or replacing hardware. My best uptime was 99 days.

I've got a box that has samba shares for some testing software (college placement stuff) that has been up and running non-stop for over 2 years. Not attached to the network (small 5 box network with no other connectivity for security) so I can't get a dump of the uptime, but like I said, over 2 years.

20 days and some odd hours has been my best, and then a failed nVidia installation FUBAR'd X and the only suggestion in the documentation was a reboot. I think it's because my kernel sources got updated so when it compiled the module the version didn't match my running kernel.

The thing that sucks is that I was mere hours away from breaking my roommate's record 21 day uptime in Windows. Of course, my reboots involve hardware and kernel updates, as opposed to his which involve his computer locking up or misbehaving badly (and generally after a week it's so bad he has to reboot, while I think a week is just getting started):D

My uptimes are 8:40 on my desktop machine (which shuts down most nights), and 28 days, 22:32 hours on my server. Load average on both machines is dang near zero, which is a shame because the CPUs are being under-utilized. Ah well.

I've had our network backup server (SMB) running 70-80 days currently on Slackware 10. Of-cource, the mouse and keyboard have both crashed (after I took them out to re-ajust cables), and the only way I get in besides server backups over samba would be through my palm in pssh. :D

(At least it was supposed to be temporary; I haven't been following their mailing list to see if something has changed since then.) I'm planning on starting it back up whenever the project restarts and begins running phase 3.

In the meantime, I should be running some other project for Free-DC (the team I was on), but I haven't put in the work to get another client running.

When my wee one was out pushing buttons I came to a simple solution. Child gate across the room where my PC's were located. And if she got past that, I opened the case and moved the power switch to the back of the case where she couldn't reach and would have no reason to reach. Problem solved

Cost: $0.00
Time: 20-30 minutes per box ( I had 9 at the time )

As for uptimes, with the weather we have had and the awesome reliablity of Central California power companies, I can't get past 4 days. Even with UPS!

My webserver for my site hit 198 days uptime before the cooling on the server stopped the run and the server over heated and crashed

proof of this uptime is here: http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph/?host=www.tlm-project.org

The server was three years old though

new server now, and new uptime record to beat :P

Ooh, forgot to post back here with my new uptime from a couple of months ago. Finally got a decent one at 50 days before the power blinked (no UPS then, got one now, and I was moving out that day anyway so it didn't matter:)). Since not long after that I've been having trouble with hard lockups, so nothing very long at all. I'm hoping maybe it was just another flaky USB hub (I have all the luck with those), but that remains to be seen. At least I finally made it over 3 days now.

Are those Linux boxen? Because doesn't the uptime have a rollover of five years or something? I thought I remember seeing that on netcraft one day.

*/me goes to check*

hmm here it is, quote from Netcraft

Why do some Operating Systems never show uptimes above 497 days ?

The method that Netcraft uses to determine the uptime of a server is bounded by an upper limit of 497 days for some Operating Systems (see above). It is therefore not possible to see uptimes for these systems that go beyond this upper limit. Although we could in theory attempt to compute the true uptime for OS's with this upper limit by monitoring for restarts at the expected time, we prefer not to do this as it can be inaccurate and error prone.

Why do you not report uptimes for Linux 2.6 or Linux alpha/ia64 ?

The Linux kernel switched to a higher internal timer rate at kernel version 2.5.26. Linux 2.4 used a rate of 100Hz. Linux 2.6 uses a timer at 1000Hz. (An explanation of the HZ setting in Linux.) The above applies to Linux on 32-bit Intel-compatible systems (which is the most common case). Linux on other platforms uses different timer rates: the Alpha and Intel ia-64 ports already used 1000Hz, while the ports for sparc, m68k and other less common processors continue to use 100Hz. The Linux TCP code only uses the low 32 bits of the timer. Due to the faster rate of the timer, the value wraps around every 49.7 days (whereas it used to wrap after 497 days). Because there are large numbers of Linux systems which have a higher uptime than this, it is no longer possible to report accurate uptimes for these systems.
Ta daa.

There you have it.

Are those Linux boxen? Because doesn't the uptime have a rollover of five years or something? I thought I remember seeing that on netcraft one day.

*/me goes to check*

hmm here it is, quote from Netcraft

Ta daa.

There you have it.

you right, and wrong.

the information on netcraft is to do with netcraft only. They are unablke to remotly get the uptime of a machine accuratly after a certain amount of days (depending on kernel version) because of kernel timings and such.

This is not the case when logging directly into the box..... uptime will report the correct uptime no problem..... i have seen photos taken of monitors with computers over 1000 days uptime.

if you look on http://arpa.net

there is a system there with 1002 days uptime or something

An uptime of one year seems like a good way to necro this thread.;)

14:28:21 up 365 days, 19:30, 1 user, load average: 1.00, 1.00, 1.00

Wow, this _is_ an old thread.

I checked all 10 or so of my Linux servers and most of them were between 150 to 250 days.

However, the server that does the most work topped them all and has plenty of resources to spare.

user@server:[~]: uptime
14:54:49 up 420 days, 15:42, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.09, 0.08

Now, if you want to talk about router and switch uptime I can easily beat 420 days! :)

Wow, this _is_ an old thread.
Yeah, but there are probably people who haven't rebooted since the post before mine was made.:)

Just a few days ago, I got up to 120 days (a personal best) on my router until a thunderstorm knocked out the power. This was a 200 MHz K6 with 32 MB of RAM and Slack 11.0

Current uptime:
# uptime
17:39:02 up 3 days, 16:01, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00

Why do I have to live in the lightning capital of the US?
