Well I'd have to say Enlightenment wm is becomming my new best friend :) . It seems to have the lightweight feeling of something like fluxbox, but is extremely customizable (not to mention I love how the windows look when its setup for translucant window dragging). Anyway heres the link:

That's openbox for the window manager and the application as noted is tormso.

I don't know. The file name is 04B.ttf but when I google for it nothing shows up. It came with the axios theme (http://themes.freshmeat.net/projects/axios/).

You should never login into X as root. If you need root permission to do something, try using su or sudo. The manpages for both of those commands will explain in more detail.

My desktop is basically the same as it was last month, except I "alienised" the colours in the background using The GIMP. I like the look a lot more now. And of course, I've still got the really awesome mouse-over effects on the icons ;)

What wm are you running ? if its a "box" wm, how did you come up with the cool icons on the desktop can you do that with idesk?

I'm running Fluxbox and the icons are done using iDesk. The relevent settings for iDesk are as follows:

Transparency: 254
CaptionOnHover: true

That way, both the text and the icons are completely invisble unless your mouse pointer is over them. Then it's simply a case of creating a background with "fake" icons actually in the image itself for when your mouse pointer is not over them. :)

I wasn't aware that true transparency with Xorg was even possible. Can anyone confirm this? Otherwise you may be thinking of something like XServer or DirectFB, which both offer true transparency, rather than Xorg.

X.Org 6.8.0 offers true transparency, IIRC.

A little guide that was posted on the archlinux ml awhile ago. (This will work with all distros, just change the way you get the xapps.)

2) pacman -S current/xapps
3) vim /etc/X11/xorg.conf
4) add at the end of this file :

Section "Extensions"

5) for the nvidia users add this in your device section :
~ Option "RenderAccel" "true"

PS : so it looks like :

6) become user again and vim ~/.xinitrc

transset <enter>

you will see your mouse cursor changing to a "+" instead of an arrow ..
click on the app that you needs to have transparency ..

EDIT: Found them. They're split up in gentoo, grab xcompmgr and transset from portage.

XComposite, I remember when it first came out I heard complaints about instability. So now I wonder, is it stable? I don't even wanna try it unless I can get 5 days of uptime out of my X sessions. I'd probably only use the drop shadows.
