recently installed a fresh copy of Fedora core 3, having core 1 previously. Core 1, i had everything i needed. Now my sound doesnt work and KDE seems to be much buggier than Gnome. Im close to putting Core 1 back on my system!

I have the same problem with any distro running a kernel higher than version 2.4. I'm running on board sound i'm going to get a sb live 5.1 sound card and see if that fixes it. I'll get the card tomorrow. Are you using on board sound? It could need to be enabled in the kernel couldn't it? I had to do that on core 1. Sometime this week i hope to get suse 9.2 or 9.1. Until then i'll problem put core 3 back on. Trying to configure alsa never worked for me because it never detected my card when i run kde but work fine in gnome.

The steps I took were something like ..
1 properly configure kernel for sound (only hard part)
2 run the slackware alsaconf script to setup alsa (works for all major distros) (script is here (http://www.indexoutofbounds.com/files/alsaconf))
3 adjust the mixers to something loud
4. that's it, sound now works.
I use nforce on-board audio on one board and and ess allegro on another. never had a problem.
