i thought id play with the xorg shadows and transparencies. i editted my xorg.conf:

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

and enabled nvidia render accel. i tried it out with KDE, and it worked very wonderfully (non perfect, some minor artifacts somtimes). i tried out the new XFCE4, and it worked great with the build in xcompgr.

its very fast, and there is no speed diffrerence. but now i can't play 3D games. i wanted to disable it, so i commented out the lines in xorg.conf. XFCE still has shadows. i put "Composite" "Disable", and it still comes.

what do i do?

Check if xcompmgr is running. That in many cases is what is producing your shadows.

never mind, i found out that logging in and out wasn't enough. i had to ctrl+alt+backspace, and the XFCE shadows are gone, and 3D works!
