Network detector?

Hello!
For example I have an laptop, I goto internet caffe and connect my laptop to caffe's ethernet wire, is there any tool that can detect there network and return me gateway, IP etc... ? Thank you!

DHCP normally handles this, IIRC.

I have try it with DHCP, but in this case this doesn't work! Any other tools?

The only way to get that info is using dhcp (afaik), or asking them and setting it manually.

Did you try typing in "dhcpcd eth0" (that is if you have dhcpcd installed and not another dhcp client) as root yourself?

For example if I have a Wireless card, and I'm for example in some place where they have a Wireless network, can DHCP set all the settings and then I can use it internet for free?

If only it were that easy.......

DHCP will give you an IP, assuming that the wireless access point has been set up to give IP address to strangers, but most AP for 'public use' will put you through a gateway which will require you to pay before you can surf.

hi guys and girls. i am new to linux. i have already connected to a network with a DHCP server but i cannot connect in a home network (with a friends pc for example) i have suse 9.0 . can anyone help me? (i have a laptop so i connect to that kind of networks alla the time. so please HELP ME!!!)
