Does anybody know where to get the md5 hashes for these files?

Just strip off the *.iso filename from any of the URLs, and you get to the directory containing the md5sum file.

Is this actually legal? I was just wondering since these ISOs are supposed to only be for Mandrake Club members who have paid at the Silver level or higher.

doesnt the gnu make it legal, I mean Im not really sure, I really dont know much about linux, im still in the learning mode stages, I did a google and found the link, thought I would pass it along. I mean I always thought linux was about passing along knowledge and software, unlike microsoft, you have to buy everything.

If I have broken any rules here I do apologize.

I've never heard anyone say that it's illegal, and Mandrake doesn't seem to have made a fuss (and they almost have to know about it) either. Mind you, that doesn't mean that it's legal, just that I haven't heard anyone specifically say it's illegal.

Darn, that's a lot of CD's to download over 80k internet though. Take me a week. Guess I'll have to start it before I leave for break and let it run for those five days (my roommate won't appreciate it much though, since he's going to be here and wanting to use the internet;)).

The ISOs were released in October for Mandrake Club Members, and are obviously free for all to download now - a month later. All according to Mandrakes 'business strategy'.

If not, we would not be allowed to log in as "anonymous" on that site now.

Cheers :)

What exactly is the powerpack? Is it additional software for Mandrake or is it a better version of their Linux distro?

I wasn't trying to accuse anyone of any wrong-doing I was just curious.

Hmmm, is there anything on those 6 CDs to make downloading them worthwhile :D
I have KDE 3.3, X.org... nah, think I'll wait for v11 ;)

I have been using Mandrake since v. 6.5. Not all versions have worked in my machines, so though at first I always bought the paid version, after a few busts, I confined myself to the free download.

Mandrake has always said the difference between the free download version, which has long had only 3 CD's, which it is legal to copy for free as many million times as you wish, to sell CD"s for copy or shipping cost, and the pay version which has many more CD's, was the inclusion of proprietary drivers and other apps for which Mandrake must pay licensing. An example, and it is only one example, is the linuxant drivers which costs like $15 if you buy them separately. Clearly Mandrake doesn't pay $15 for each pack sold, but they have to pay a negotiated fee.

I am convinced that is still true. I do not know what has prompted that URL to take pay CD's and cat them to their server for all to take free, but I am convinced it is not legal. And, I think the statement that "mandrake must know" is purely wishful thinking. If Mandrake wanted to give you the 6 CD's free, they would put them on the same mirrors that have the Community (free 3 CD"s). Think about it.

The CD"s which are available to paid members of Mandrake's club, and are open to the public some time later are the free downloads of the 3 CD's, not the pay set.

You have a choice, You can, if you care about the legality, email Mandrake and ask them the legality of the free 6 CD downloads.

Or, if you don't care, you can go ahead and download them without a care in your head, I am not a software cop.

Or, you can truck out to your electronic store, and pay the correct legal price, or even do as many of us do, that is use the free 3 CD's and hustle to make the drivers work.

The only thing I ask is that you not try to convince others that this is legal, without checking it out first.

Mandrake is not a wealthy company, a couple years ago they filed for protection by the bankruptcy courts, and they don't need to be destroyed by piracy which MS could easily survive, but Mandrake cannot.

By the way, that is not the only URL which is offering the pirated copies.

I looked around the Mandrake site and some other sites. I believe they are still only shipping or allowing downloads of Mandrake Official 10.1 to Mandrake Clubh members. The 10.1 Community (which is the 10.1 development release) is being offered free. So until someone proves otherwise, we will have to delete the links. And Mandrake does need the money, even if it is just $5 for making your linux life easier.
From the Mandrake site:
* A DVD of Mandrakelinux 10.1 Community that includes commercial software (Flash/Java plugins, JDK, etc.) and non-free drivers (Nvidia and ATI video cards) is available for purchase on Mandrakestore. Order it now at Mandrakestore.
* Mandrakeclub Members of level Silver and above have privileged access rights! Mandrakeclub Silver Members can download ISO images which contain commercial applications and drivers, and to KDE 3.3 packages. They are also granted free access to the new Mandrakeonline update system. Gold and above level Members have access to the ISO image of the commercial DVD.

Not a Mandrakeclub Member yet? Enroll now! "
So proprietary drivers are included on the "Official" releases.

Well, now it doesn't really matter as the 10.1 Official Download Edition is publicly available.

Well, it still does. Since this thread was about the PowerPack (6 CD set), and not the Official Community edition (3 CD set).

ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrake/Mandrakelinux/official/iso/10.1/i586
This link from the Mandrake mirror list for the Official 10.1 iso has 4 cd's listed, so I'm assuming the extra proprietary packages/rpms have been left off and that is why you can download it. So you can use the above link or these from this list:
http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en-us/ftp.php3

just no nvidia, adobe acrobat, sun java, ati, etc included. But you can get those on the manufacturer/business sites.
