My friend is trying to set up a file/game server for his house. He wants to easily be able to share files with the windows users that come over with their PCs. He's wants something with easy setup. The box is going to be on the network, but not on the internet. He also wants to be able to run the UT2K4 dedicated server as well. The box will probably be sitting in the closet most of the time. So the distro doesn't really need to be elaborate, just looking for something easy for setup.

I think Gentoo would work just fine for that. Debian is the first that comes to mind when talking about servers - but I dunno whether it can easily run UT.

The servers that you pay for that host UT etc usually run Red Hat, but Dell has just struck a deal with SuSE to distrobute SuSE pre-installed servers.

I recommend looking at the best provider of the type of server you want, then send them a possible customer question asking for specific specs of their servers. Which they should be happy to give you. Then base it on this.
