I just installed Kurumin 3.2 (a Brazilian flavor of Knoppix) and managed to set the numerical key on during the boot using the Kde Control Center.
Unfortunately, this works only when using the graphical interface (Kde). As I work, most of the times, with the text mode I continue without my numerical key on during the boot. I have always to remember to press the numerical key when I have to use the numerical keypad.
Do anybody knows a trick to fix it??

I just got used to using the upper Num keys, I actually find it faster these days.

I haven't tried this yet so I don't know if this works...but
Try changing or adding KDB_NUMLOCK="yes" in the /etc/rc.conf file
If using Gentoo try
rc-update add numlock default
or to have it turn on when startx is run add to your startup settings
numlockx on
Let us know what works for you and what distro :)

Check the system bios setup stuff, and enable numlock on boot, my guess is you should have something like that some where in your bios

Unfortunately, my distro (Kurumin 3.2 (a Brazilian flavor of Knoppix)) doesn't have the file /etc/rc.conf.
"or to have it turn on when startx is run add to your startup settings numlockx on "
Don't believe that will work because it is working fine under kde.

It is checked to work at boot on. It is working fine under windows xp.
Still don't have my numeral lock led on at booting.

In Mandrake, there's a demon called numlock that turns it on at boot (including for console). If Kurumin doesn't have it, it shouldn't be too hard to get hold of.

well it's mysterious like a demon, very little documentation :) but I just checked and it is numlock that controls the numlock. It's available on its own as an rpm, I dunno about other package types tho. Somthing else you might wasnt to try is setleds
