I bought my fyrst laptop ever ca 2 mounths ago, it is a HP/Compac nx9005 with 512 mb 266 memory.
Radeon 64 mb.
2500 amd xp mobile.

It came with Windows xp but i have been using Suse mostly for 2 years so i quickly dualbooted with suse 9.1.
I have been trying to get the wireless card working with no sucsess in linux ( i bought "wireless home networking for dummies" and read it cover to cover to be sure not to be missing something obvious). it does not cover linux but it made me sure of the fundementals.
I installed Gentoo on the laptop but no sucsess with wireless, then i installed mandrake 10 and same then i read that "mandrake 10.1 comunity" came with better suport for laptops and seamles switsing beatvin wired and wireless. (My wireless card is a "SMC2532W-B" with a prismX chipset)
So i jumped on that as a quick fix but it wont eaven install.
The install rutine goes fine but when it asks me to reaboot it stops on this:

ACPI: Subsistem revision 20040326
spurius 8259A interrupt: IRQ7
ACPI: IRQ9 SCI: Level Trigger.

Can you tell me how to get past this error and get mandrake 10.1 installed ?

I kow that "community" is like a beta X, so should i give up on this and start anouther thred on wireless troubleshouting under suse 9.1?

Wireless card drivers have been discussed many times.

http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/

Use that to install your wireless card.

This is just to finish of my own thred.
For the acpi problem i just put in cd nr 1 of mandrake 10.1 c and did a upgrade, takes ca 1 min and got to reconfiguring settings, and went into the bootloader settings for lilo (still default for mandrake) and put in acpi=off.
The laptop then booted up but the fan at full throtle all the time.
But i wanted to see if i could get my wireless card working.
I had tryed for 2 months with meny distros and read a lot of guides, after the fyrst month with trying ndiswrapper for my rtl 8180 i got another pcmcia card, this time a "SMC2532w-b" fully suported under linux but with both cards i allways got the lights on and under iwconfig i saw the mac adress of the AP but could newer get a ip adress.
I then tryed a fix i had tryed on all the other distros: Exclude irq 3 and irq 5 in "etc/pcmcia/config.opts"
And my wireless came alive in mandrake 10.1c.
Strangely i had to reconfigure it evry time i started it up and on the 3 day all pcmcia related
died. That day i got my "Linux Format" magasin with mepis 2004.01" and installed it on my desktop and was very impressed and downloaded
mepis 2004.02 and tryed it on my laptop and it was 100% for my needs, acpi worked, wireless worked, it had similar package selection as suse 9.1 and i am in love!!

The conclusion is that my problems were hardware related and had something to do with irq and pcmcia probems on my laptop.
