OK,

So I need a distro I can install on a laptop, to a firewire drive like /dev/sda but I want to have nothing change the primary hard drive or OS. So I need one that I can boot from a CD then tell it to boot linux over on the firewire - no boot loader on primary HD.

Any ideas. I know knoppix can do this but I want to know if their are any others...

TIA,

I think it is dependant on the BIOS. If the computer supports boot off firewire, you are fine. Install Linux to the firewire hard drive and then write the boot manager to a floppy when it asks. This will totally leave the laptop current config alone.

NOTE: Make several backups of the boot floppy. :)
