VoiDex found this fairly new distro, Vidalinux (http://desktop.vidalinux.com/index.php?option=content&task=blogcategory&id=8&Itemid=27)
and so being a distro junkie, I downloaded and installed it.
Gentoo based with the anaconda installer. Uses XFree86. Also the 2.6 kernel. It was kind of weird seeing the Redhat installer with emerge synce options.
Installation went smoothly, all graphical. Gdesklets even worked correctly. :) Recognized all the hardware except no automatic Nvidia proprietary driver available for the 2.6 kernel. And with the Geforce FX5900, I ended up with twin monitors except I only have one monitor. One screen was on top of the other. "xf86config" solved that problem.
Worth taking a look at it, still a beta release. Nothing about SATA drives anywhere on the site.

Nifty-- this might actually make me try out Gentoo!
Question, though: If it's using the 2.6 kernel, wouldn't SATA be in there? I mean... why wouldn't it be, at least as an option, or part of the initrd?

which stage install does it wind up doing?

I think your biased hard candy to a Georgia distro:
Vidalia-linux ......boots to an onion. Make a grown man cry. :D

!. I do not have SATA, so I could not test an install with SATA. And the forums, docs, etc never mention SATA. SO I would not know if it can do an auto SATA install or would need a boot disk.
2. It is a Stage 3, basically boots up to Gnome. It did do a "emerge Gnome" but did not compile it. I think it emerges a binary off the install cd.
3. I never thought of Vidalinux being connected to Vidalia onions. That would explain why it has a lot of "a peel". :)

The mirror is still down, I'm wondering if maybe they should have used Slackware for the server? :)
I tried emailing an iso to someone but neither bellsouth or gmail would allow a file of that size to be processed.

I am using vida & am a forum member at the site, I thought I saw an announcement posted that the site was going to be down for a few day's for upgrades. This distro makes installing and getting gentoo up & running a fairly quick & painless processes. emerge has made me lazy,no more tracking down deps when installing software :D

I just recieved this e-mail today from the Vidalinux Desktop OS community & I thought I would pass it along
"This is a mail from Vidalinux Desktop OS
Message:
Since September 15 sites http://desktop.vidalinux.com , http://vidalinux.com/bugzilla and http://store.vidalinux.com were down because the storm Jeanne (http://huracan.net/current/st11/) passed by Puerto Rico and the power, where the servers are, went off. Our apologize to all of you that has requested our distro, we have decide to move the release date of Vidalinux 1.0 to Octuber 20, currently the two developers of the project dont have energy on their houses. The people that pre-order VLOS 1.0 will recevied the CD as soon as we get our energy back on our houses.
Thanks All "

stage3 (most likely) so if u want totally customized don't bother... unless they have made drastic changes in the past 2-3 months to the anaconda installer.

VoiDeR not VoiDex ;) I have to agree im a distro junkie as well but i always come back to Gentoo. Ive been using Vidalinux for a week now and im in the process of writing up a little review. So far this is an awsome distro. I dont know about anyone esle but my install cd has stage 1 and 2 on it but i just havent figured out how to use them. The only problem i have had so far is when i updated the system for some reason evolution broke. I had to completely unemerge it and re-emerge it. No biggy though was probably my fault anyway.

would it turn out to be noticably quicker than Mandrake 10? or Debian?

Untill this headache goes away im definatly an unstable version.

In my experince a stage 3 is incredibaly faster than any Mandrake or Red Hat install. As for debian & slack i would say there about the same. I have never done a stage 1 so i cant really compare that to anything.

yes it should with beta 2 you can download ISO's that are precompiled for your ARCH. there are only like 6 bianary packages on the cd that help to kick start the installer xfree & gnome are emerged with portage automaticly by the installer & emerge compiles them for your system no binaries are used

Looks interesting, I think I'll check it out too, being a Distro Junkie also!
Hey girl!

Downloading it at the moment...i've got 2 SATA drives. Hope this doesn't give me much trouble like some other distro's do.
Oh oh, doesn't work for me either. Can't detect my SATA drives, the installation hangs on "Loading ata_piix driver".

I installed vidalinux on its own partition. I edited grub to include it, and can boot vidalinux. I did emerge sync, it took a while and I think it had a few problems. installed gaim, and that took a while too.
Anyway, looks like fun. Now I just have to figure out how to make /home(which is on this same partition) point at my actual /home, which is on its own partition. My other OS is ProMepis.

if Vidal is really based on gentoo, cant you install it with the anaconda installer and make sure it works, then later you can edit the make file that gentoo uses make.config, or whatever it is, then do a make world ?
thats what the gentoo guys do right?
bosox79
12-28-2004, 01:03 AM
Yes ruwach you are correct Vida is basically Gentoo with the Anaconda based installer.
With some added features

Well then... this should be the answer to the curious group who have either been intimidated by the regular install procedure for Gentoo or, like myself, have botched the thing big time, but desire to give Gentoo a whirl.
cool, need to give it a shot soon

ounce you do your first emerge -u word you will have a "gentoo" box you will need to setup your etc/make.conf to your liking before you use emerge check both the vida and gentoo forums and docs for great documentation on how to do this. I would start here http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/index.xml?catid=gentoo
Hope that helps
