Did anyone ever manage to get Vega Strike working?!
Ive been trying for the past two days and cant get it going.
I tried the installer, it didnt work.
I tried compiling (configure, make, make install), and it gives me some sort of python problem.
I even tried urpmi for it, and when its installed, it doesnt work....just crashes and forces me to restart X.
I have a feeling the urpmi version didnt work cause when i was installing it, it had some md5sum issues, so i figured it was a bad version or something.

So my question, does anyone know of a how-to install vegastrike??, or maybe some rpms or something??

I googled but didnt find anything besides links to the official page and reviews....ill keep looking though. The game looks really neat.

I just tried two seperate rpms from rpmfind.net and both didnt work.
one of them had a problem with (unsatisfied vegastrike-data
and the other had (unsatisfied OpenAL)

I have never run this game myself, so I dunno how much help I will be but, what happened when you ran the installer? what errors did you get? what error do you receive when X crashes?

ill have to download the installer to give the other errors, but when x crashes, my desktop just gets all scrambled up.....the game doesnt start at all, my desktop basically gets scrambled and ends up looking sort of like a puzzle(gotta move pieces around to make it look the way its supposed to.)
When this happens, my computer doesnt respond to mouse movement/clicking, so I use the key stroke CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE and then log back in.

Ill download the installer again, and post the errors.

I ran urpmi python and it said everything installed.
I ran what you suggested and got this:

File "<stdin>", line 1
zlib1-1.2.1-2mdk
^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax

I read on another forum that I need python2.2-devel package. I just now gotta figure out where to find this, since urpmi says it doesnt have it. Maybe Ill try changine up my urpmi sources.

well I found python on rpmfind.net, i even found python2.2-devel there...but of course I couldnt install either one of them due to dependencies...yey!!

I think it might be time to look for new urpmi sources.

yeah dependences can be a major pain with RPM based distro's have you seen or used this before http://urpmi.org/easyurpmi/index.php#third
it may help you reconfigure your URPMI sources:)

I appreciate the link, but thats actually what I use to configure my urpmi.

I think I might just have to try a bunch of other urpmi servers on that site and hopefully one of them will have what I want/need......I expect this to be really time consuming:(

anyhoo, I appreciate the replies, and if you happen to find an easy way to install python development packages feel free to let me know:)

This is just a thought but here goes,
have you looked on your mandrake cd's for the packages? I would go ahead and install the devlopment packages off your mandrake cd's.

HTH & your welcome

well im making progress.
I turned on rpmdrake, searched for python, and installed everythign that involved python.
Result: python problem fixed, now have a GLUT problem.
Ill probably try doing the same thing to solve this.

What I find weird is that rpmdrake found new packages that involved python, but urpmi in the terminal didnt find them....maybe I didnt search properly or something.

Anyhoo, atleast im getting closer:)

alrite, i managed to urpmi for the required GLUT development packages. It configured, but I still cant seem to get the game running....I think its time to read a lot more stuff on the vegastrike site.

Thanx for your help

your welcome & that may be the best source to look at. I wonder if the installer on the cd available for purchase has the same installer that you downloaded? you may want to post a question over on the vega strike forum

best of luck:)

LOL
this has to be the greatest example of dependency hell.
I have downloaded two rpms, one has data files, and the other has installation files.

get this: i cant install either one of them cause one requires the other one to be installed and vice versa!

i think i saw that you are using mandrake 10? i'm on gentoo 2004.2 and i just hit $: emerge vegastrike and it resolved some ftp sites and then compiled on it's own. the install was successful but the rendering is super slow at least on my box. maybe check out the gentoo web sites and they might have something on specifics outside of the build, i have also found trikster abacus's website is awsome when it comes to gaming!

www.trikster.homelinux.org/trikster.htm

hope that helps

rpm -ivh package1.rpm package2.rpm

That way they won't complain about each other.

I've been wanting to try this game for years but have been unsecessful with it. I'm running Gentoo now and I'm running the emerge on it...wow, 175MB.....

well, Im officialy an idiot!!

A few posts back I mentioned how when I install the rpms it just scrambles my screen....well I tried it again, and once again it scrambled up my screen. This time howeever I heard my hdd working so I left it alone for a bit, and the game loaded!!
It just takes a little bit of time for it to load on my slow box.
So the game works, now I just gotta figure out how to actually play it.

thanx for everyones responses

your welcome & let us know how the game is :)

Ive been playing for a while now and the game looks very nice. The planets and ships are really beautiful.
Few negatives though:

1. Since I just started, I dont get to do much fighting.....mostly just flying delivery missions and patrol missions.

2. I dont have any music. Im hoping to have this problem solved though.

The game has a lot of potential for fun, especially if you ever wanted to fly around in space. It will take quite a bit of learning though, cause some of the controls are a bit tricky. If you are a fan of star wars or flying through space and enjoy looking at nicely modeled planets and ships, I highly recommend the game. I guess try it and see for yourselves :)

one more thing.

The game tends to be repetitive. It will probalby change as I progress through the game, but right now its a little repetitive.

Still beautiful designs though.

Let us know how you like it, bosox

I had a hard time installing it too. I was missing a .deb file (I use debian). Anyway, after trying and trying to install it (for about 3 minutes) I finally fired it up. Let me tell you, it isn't worth it. That game sucks. <-period

It's not bad, but yes the flight sim part is not good (don't plan on getting into a fight), the music is creepy lame, the graphics are not terrible, the load times are long (not really, but the scene is displayed long before it's loaded)

Of course I only played it for 15 minutes...seems like they want to make a 'better' Privateer, but it's worse then Freelancer :)

Thanks for the heads up guys, I may skip the emerge

Im actually getting bored with the game already.
It has its good moments, but the repetiveness really makes the game boring.
I expected a little more fighthing, maybe that would take place later on in the game.
Any way, if you have the spare time, give it a try for yourself and see what you think.

One recommendation though, check out the manual on the vegastrike website.....just google for vegastrike and then look for the manual there.
It will help you out a bit.

Calipso,

Thanks for the update, I am not a big computer gamer, I prefer my console for that, I may give the game a shot if I get bored one day:)
