CUPS is set up and the driver hpijs is working fine.

hpijs -h

Hewlett-Packard Co. Inkjet Server 1.6.1
Copyright (c) 2001-2004, Hewlett-Packard Co.

The ink cartiges are brand new. It can print a cups test page fine but thats
it. It does not print a document or anything else when i click on print. No error messages either.
Instead it prints out blank pages and weird letters

how can i fix this?

thanks

i beleive i solved the problem BUT whenever i am printing something i see a black line behind each sentence. It needs to be cleaned and aligned right?
Is this possible under linux?

Cleaned, yes - Aligned, maybe...

The alignment proceedure just makes sure the two print heads are aligned with each other when it prints. If you're printing with only one cartridge, alignment isn't your problem. Besides, darn near every HP I've played with are usually spot-on as far as alignments.

Now your problem may be as simple as ink gunk build-up on the bottom of the print carriage. If you look at where the heads "park" when powered down, you'll see the two stations underneath that have the rubber cups to keep the heads from drying out, as well as the rubber "squee-gees" that clean the excess ink from the heads. Grab some Q-Tips (R) and isopropyl alcohol, and swab down those squee-gees. Getting underneath the carriage itself is a chore, so try the squee-gees first. Also blot up some of the ink from the sponge pads while you're in there. DO NOT clean the heads with the alcohol - it may cause damage! Allow things to dry, and test.

If you still get those lines, then it's most likely a driver problem. If the line is through the center, then you may be using the wrong codepage font (strikethrough), likewise for underlining.

Let us know what it looks like in there (and, for the record, what model printer you have).
