do you want to install Linux onto a hard disk? Libranet is debian based and it is a good distro I have not used the latest version, how current is your hardware? if you want a Debian Variant check out knoppix you may also want to check this thread http://www.justlinux.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=53
what are you looking for out of you distro? I would recommend you start using either mandrake or Fedora if you want an easy to install distro edit/ try out as many distro's as you can get your hands on the best way to find one that works for you is to keep trying them out untill you find one you like. start with the ones I listed and have a look at the forum/thread I posted /edit

and welcome to JL :D

i don't even have the machine yet in which i'm going to install it, and i really just wan't play with linux, so i i'll get a better hang of it. a friend of mine has fedora, but he can't play mp3's with it, so i skipped it :D but fedora is a choice too. anyways the pc is probably a few year old. i'll see it tomorrow to decide if i'll even buy it.

naula,

just an FYI you can add MP3 support back into XMMS using tools like APT4RPM see my sig. also if you do a forum search like I did you will find tons of threads about adding MP3 playback support into RH/Fedora check redhat MP3 support (http://www.justlinux.com/forum/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=1004348&sortby=last)

let me know how things go HTH

if you just want to "play" and aren't even sure if you are going to keep linux then get a free (as in $$) distro. there's no point in buying a distro and then deciding you don't like linux at all.

A nice feature of Libranet 2.8.1 is that it gives you some 9 choices of GUI before you log in.

kde will run fine on it, just not the newest version. i had kde on my 350mhz. you should look at fluxbox for you wm. and if you just want to play around with linux it doesn't matter what distro you choose. just pick one. and if you are really stuck i now have a link to a distro chooser in my sig

My main PC as well as my test box are both 550 Mhz machines. I would recommend having at least 256 megs of ram. I run FC2 on the PC with 256 Ram. Wish I had more but it runs great. I've installed many distros on the test box with only 128 m ram but all have been sluggish running KDE or Gnome. Using one of the 'box' window managers -Blackbox, Fluxbox, etc- performance is faster. The processor should be good enough if you have at least 256 or more of ram.

On a sidebar: I'm playing with Slackware on the test box. And I have very good results. Something to think about. But be forewarned, Slackware is not a newbie's distro.

Visit Distrowatch.com for a complete update on all the distros avalable to you.
