I don't know if this has been posted before, I searched and didn't find it. But this (http://www.tuxs.org/chooser/) is a link to Distro Chooser at tuxs.org which might help an undecided newbie settle on a first distro.

I tried that just to see what it said, and it recommended Debian. That's the distro I use! Seems accurate to me... :D

I just ran the chooser & it picked out my current distro of choice:D

If you use a PC, want a more technical version of Linux, your computer is less 2 years old and want to install Linux on your hard drive then LDC suggests:

Debian Linux

Debian Linux website

Debian Linux Distrowatch page

Notice that this is for hardware that's less than 2 years old (ie new and requiring a more recent kernel)

If you use a PC, want a more technical version of Linux, your computer is more than 2 years old and want to install Linux on your hard drive then LDC suggests:

Gentoo Linux

Gentoo Linux website

Gentoo Linux Distrowatch page.

Notice this is for older hardware

Technically, shouldn't these be reversed?

lupin,

I believe you are correct;) but Gentoo runs fine on my 3 year old hardware:D

Rumor is that Debian will be having a new official release soon...sometime in the next 2 years I bet

Just tried it, and it recommended Debian and I use Slackware 10.0 :-(

Don't think I'll change though !!

It recommended Gentoo, which is what I use.

we should provide a link to that site for people that can't choose a distro though. actually i was thinking of recommending a program that randomly chose a distro whenever someone wanted to know what to use

Why use a "chooser" that gives only two choices? I'll choose neither.:D

JohnT,

I can understand why you would'nt need it. I thought you were a happy slacker:p and would have no need for such a great tool as this ;)

I remember going through this where I "knew " the "right answer" was Debian and ended up with Fedora-- which I detest so I was a little surprised. Also I had a feeling that if I had chosen "I use a PC and I want an easy to use version of Linux" I wouldn't have ever gotten Debian, which is a shame. After all I would consider Debian "easy to use" (apt-get anyone?) but not "simple" as I fell they are going for. Personally I think if you don't want bleeding edge, aren't looking at a desktop, don't need professional the only answer is Debian. Really for a server what else would you want?

I told it I wanted an easy to use, installed distro for hardware less than 2 years old and it told me Mandrake which was my first distro. I found this link on distro watch and I really didn't look it over too well, I just assumed that it would cover a lot of distros.

It came up with the distro I am using... I think it's quite good tho

Whether this is because it lists the distro's I've used on the my new machine as I have gone from basic to more technical who can say...

It's going to be a slap in the face for the newbie with brand spanking new hardware who wants a technical linux and gets recommended debian... hopefully sarge will be out soon and they won't have to deal with an older kernel that will most probably not support that brand spanking new hardware... I still think the test is pretty inaccurate... my opnion though I guess...

It was spoilt once -- it recommended to me gentoo for a "technical" distro.

However, today its ok and it recommended gentoo :D
