Right i haqve firestarter firewall on my pc, and i have just noticed a 'back orifice' come up on the hit display. the destination ip address is that of another windows box on my home network. How worried should i be?

I would start there. bwkaz 08-30-2004, 08:07 PM 'Back Orifice' is a Windows worm... if the machine in question (the firestarter one) is a Linux machine, then I'm fairly sure that that particular machine is OK. However, the machine listed in the logs (the other Windows one on your network) is likely already infected with Back Orifice, and is trying to infect other machines. Get it either fixed or off the network, ASAP. Given the age of Back Orifice (it's about 4 or 5 years old now), however, you'll want to run through Windows Update as soon as practicable also, and update the virus definitions plus run a full virus scan. justlinux.com
