Hello

I keep hearing that the ATI drivers to linux really suck so I would like to know if there is some unofficial drivers or something like that which is better?
If not are these drivers so buggy that it is such a big problem?

Its not releasing a big portion of the power of the cards. 3D looks bad, and they are a bit buggy, of course.

They have official drivers, and I think it might breach some law or whatever to make unofficial ones. Or maybe they are the best already.

For the most part the ATI work, but I've personally have had some odd behaviour with them...mostly with games that require lots of memory (UT2004 Onslaught maps mainly) where they just do not work. It might be that I have a mobile chip, but I don't know for sure.

Overall they seem to work fine though

And, gentoo seems to document the installation of these cards and index them quite well in portage! :D

(I can't resist this :D)

I am playing the same game all the time and my ATI 3D graphics work like a dream. :)

I have noticed that if you can get them to work at all, they'll work pretty well. OTOH, if you have issues (like if you can't get direct rendering to turn on in glxinfo), then I haven't been able to figure out a way to get that to work.

For the record, nVidia's drivers are the same way -- if you have them installed as far as the nVidia tools can tell, but direct rendering is still off as far as glxinfo can tell, then you're just as hosed. But nVidia has a linux-bugs email address that responds most of the time, and it also doesn't seem to have that type of problem quite as often. It does still happen sometimes, though.

It sounds from the tone of your post that you have an ATI card and are wondering whether it'll work? Can't hurt to try it if so. :)
