ok don't shoot me if i put this in the wrong posting or anything, forgive me for i am a newbie...... -_- .... but anyways...... first thing is, does it matter what distribution of linux you have? i mean theres sooooo many and i've seen SuSe and tried to mess around with Knoppix (i just got it today and it was freezing on me (damn CD boot up!)). i kind want to see what everyone is running and what they recommend. im an engineering major and want to begin familiarizing myself with UNIX / Linux. Thank you for taking your time and reading my posting.

You are right, there are soooo many Linux distros available it's difficult to choose...without doing research
Most newbie like Mandrake or SuSE for their simplicity.
Moving to ISO confused...and renaming ;)

distrowatch (http://distrowatch.com) is a good place to get some basic information about a distro. they have a nice writeup on the 'major distros' and contain a good summary and fair amount of links for each distro.
and no, it doesn't really matter which distro you have. it seems half of the distros available originated as Redhat or Debian offspring.
start there and look around. linux will put to good use your research skills and your problem solving abilities. :D
